Some video games have become notorious for their shock factor (this game comes to mind) Now, with the booming popularity of mobile gaming, developers are beginning to take notice and push the envelope for what Apple and Google will allow on their respective devices.

This isn’t a list meant to make your jaw drop, even though some of them undoubtedly will. The point is to take a look at why these games/apps are controversial, and to determine whether or not they should be allowed in app stores and what factors contribute to this decision.

Here’s our list of the top 7 most controversial apps and games to hit mobile devices. How many of them do you own (or are going to purchase after you read this?):

1) Dog Wars/KG Dogfighting

This game was recently released to more controversy than Duke Nukem and Grand Theft Auto, combined.

“Raise your dog to beat the best…Feed, water, train and FIGHT your virtual dog against other players …” Keep Reading

I’ve been playing games since I was a kid and I struggled for years with people who thought online games were stupid and action games made you violent. I considered this a chance to present some insight into what gaming really can be about – passion, friendship and experiences you can’t get in the real world.

~ Ben Dressler

Let’s face it, the gamer lifestyle is something that not a lot of people understand. /AFK The Movie examines the life of a gamer told to give up the only thing he’s ever loved: World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft

To people that don’t play video games, that’s called quitting. For hard-core gamers and MMORPG players around the world, that’s called “Euthanasia.” Keep Reading

Attention gamers everywhere! Ever get annoyed by how difficult it is to play split screen? Tired of when logos pop up in your corner so large your entire vision is obscured*? Nintendo has a solution!

By giving you a smaller screen.

No, seriously.

*Nintendo does not actually have a solution for X-Box Live notifications killing you in Halo: Reach

The piranhas we call video-game journalists have sunken their teeth into a flurry of Nintendo rumors that’d put Peter Molyneux (Fable) to shame. First, a rumor about a new console announcement, which I couldn’t be any more excited about. For starters, take a look at the specs (leaks) of the new console.

Some of them are rightfully badass.

IGN has learned that the system will be based on a revamped version of AMD’s R700 GPU architecture, not AMD’s Fusion technology as previously believed, which will, as previously reported, out perform the PlayStation 3′s NVIDIA 7800GTX-based processor. Like the Xbox 360, the system’s CPU will be a custom-built triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset, but the clocking speeds will be faster.

That would  essentially put it a full two generations ahead of its predecessors in terms of power. Seriously, two generations. I’m honestly not even sure of how that’s possible, considering a generation is a measure of progeny and quality. If we were to base the quality of one’s off spring as their placement in a genealogical tree then we’d suddenly find ourselves in a world of–

futurama pictures

Touché Fry. Moving on.

Of the details that were also revealed (still technically, “rumored”) was the possibility of a controller that has a built-in touch screen, streaming 1080 video and other features that might lend themselves to better multi-player experience. In playing split-screen, you can turn off your section of the screen and play entirely on your controller.

Didn’t someone do that already?

I can’t help but wonder what life must be like at a big corporation while under attack by hackers…

I picture a bunch of suits passing around various drafts of the same statement, trying to find the perfect blend of words to help defuse the debacle. Everyone almost certainly has their nose in a Webster’s Thesaurus, looking for as many different meanings for the word apology as possible…

Hell yes!

Lots of speculation has been running rampant over the last week or so about the possibility of another system launching. Normally, I might brush over this, except I remember running across a few websites where anonymous sources were quoted as saying Nintendo wanted to try and re-acquire some of the “hardcore gaming” demographic.

That’s what excites me. Keep Reading

AtomicGamer released an interview with one of the developers of Diablo III earlier this week. As could be expected, the interview maintained the minimum level of hype the game needs in order to both not be forgotten about, and also not be so expected that our gamer heads explode as though we just experienced the plot of Groundhog’s Day on Christmas Eve (Punxsutawney Phil says 7 more months without a release date)

A lot of interesting things were mentioned, but mostly about how they perceived Diablo was going to be more

Jace Hall musicFor those of you that can’t get enough of the new Mortal Kombat song, the Jace Hall Show is offering a free download of the song that you can take wherever you go. Want to listen to the Mortal Kombat song while you’re at the gym on your iPod? How about as a little background music while you play the new Mortal Kombat video game itself (truly epic).

The Mortal Kombat song is running it’s way through the video game world as we speak, and while it was inspired by the original “Techno Syndrome”, Jace’s version doesn’t use any samples from the original track. Still, fans are psyched just to be playing Mortal Kombat again, let alone hearing a new edition of their favorite song. If you want to have this track all for yourself visit our facebook page and download the mp3 for free!

video game music

By Paul Nyhart

What’s the only thing that’s more unforgettable than our favorite video games? The songs that played in them.

I found this out the hard way when my parents used to send me to my room…I had the rocks to play video games, anyway, but wasn’t going to blow my cover and play them with the sound on (it just wasn’t the same…)

Video games without their title tracks is like cereal without milk…a television without a remote…a fancy car with no radio (I’ll stop now). Music sets the tone for the gameplay, drives us right into the action, and as the list below points out, it’s ultimately one of the main things we remember about our particular video game experiences.

These are my top, most unforgettable songs and scores from video games. Keep Reading

Mortal Kombat the video game

Written By “Dash”

We’re days away from the release of Mortal Kombat’s  latest installation, and the epic Jace Hall Mortal Kombat music video. This means that fans of the Mortal Kombat video game will finally get to see for themselves what all the hype is about (and a music video that blows their mind).

How much hype have fans dealt with? I hear this video game single-handedly caused a shortage in exclamation-marks and ones.

“OMG MK!!!!11!1!11”

Hype, in and of itself, is a beautiful and double-edged sword. However, dancing around all the topics is the subtext underneath:

How will Mortal Kombat fare this time around…what will ultimately be the “video game’s destiny?”

A part of Mortal Kombat’s initial appeal was that it took its story line as satire off of martial arts films. Think about it. Keep Reading

World of Warcraft terrorist threat

Written by Paul Nyhart

Apparently the government feels like going after the content of video games isn’t enough…now they want to go after gamers, themselves.

FBI agents recently raided an apartment in Ann Arbor, Michigan where the residents are being accused of gold farming (often mentioned with “powerleveling), which The World Bank Groups InfoDev arm describes both as:

Services where an online game player hires someone else to play the game on their behalf. They do this in order to obtain the virtual rewards of the play without having to spend the time and effort.

Otherwise known to gamers as…cheating…or the black market’s answer to the game genie.

It’s believed that the “gold farming allegations” are linked to terrorist activity. FBI Special agent said she couldn’t talk about the matter in detail because many of the documents remained sealed.

The residents were even more clueless, as they were quoted as saying: Keep Reading

Bully video game fight

We talked about bullies a few weeks back, when the Street Fighter video was being circulated on every computer from here to Sydney, Australia. The overall consensus with bullying is that it inherently is a part of human nature, and often times, isn’t as exclusive to children as we think. The main question is, how do you deal with it, and prevent it from hurting your self-esteem?

This recently got my attention: an article which tells the story of a little girl who received an otoplasty to “pin back her ears.”

“Cami Roselles…decided that her daughter should have otoplasty…She hopes this will keep other children from ridiculing her. The surgery will cost approximately $5,000 to $10,000 and is not covered by Roselles’s insurance.” Keep Reading

No matter what anyone tells you, or what you might think, our parents ALWAYS want what’s best for us. Even when it comes to video games…

Most parents are simply not familiar with video games–in a way, they’re afraid of them. Even to this day, the fact that I write about video games is something of an oddity to my parents. It’s something that wasn’t part of their childhood, and thus, they don’t know how to react to something they don’t have any personal experience with. They think it doesn’t have a great deal of importance, maybe compared to the grand scheme of things, video games don’t. But that isn’t to say that they’re worthless or they don’t have tremendous value. Keep Reading

Some of you may have heard about Jack Tretton’s out of context quote on a number of other websites. However, it took me an actual ten minutes to find the article itself with the right google search. I rather like context.

“”Our view of the ‘Game Boy experience’ is that it’s a great babysitting tool, something young kids do on airplanes, but no self-respecting twenty-something is going to be sitting on an airplane with one of those,” he says. “He’s too old for that.”” -Fortune magazine interview

Ok. There are two things wrong with this quote, other than the fact he has no room to bash another console openly. (In the link: Scroll down further to confirm that Sony comes in last in every single sales competition)

First off, let’s address what the entire internet is going crazy over. Keep Reading
