Netflix continues to make a splash in the news, this time for the better, with the announcement that they’ll be expanding their content library with titles from the AMC Network library.
What might be the biggest coup for Netflix out of the deal is that The Walking Dead will be exclusive to Netflix in the U.S. and Canada, heading towards the shows debut on October 12th.
The Walking Dead debuted its webseries online yesterday, to mixed reviews, and obviously with this announcement is making quite the push towards braodcasting themselves to streaming audiences everywhere.
Shows from across the AMC portfolio of IFC, Sundance Channel, and WE tv will become available to Netflix subscribers just before the new season of each series begins.
What can you look for? IFC’s Portlandia and The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret for starters.
For those of you not plugged into the Netflix world (or are strictly just Qwikster users) Netflix already offers Mad Men and Breaking Bad in the U.S. and Latin America through separate agreements with Lions Gate Entertainment and Sony Pictures. The new announcement not only offers exclusivitiy to one of AMC’s premium shows, it helps round out the line-up.
Said AMC Networks president and CEO Josh Sapan:
This agreement supports the cable ‘ecosystem’ by making our content available to Netflix nearly a year following the linear premiere, it brings our content to a wider audience, and it provides additional revenue to support production of new shows.
Netflix has hard what you could call a “difficult” couple of months. Netflix’s stock set a new 52-week low at $112.58, down more than 11 percent. In July, shares were going for $304. They also said they expect to lose nearly 600 thousand US subscribers this quarter.
But with additions like the Walking Dead and whispers that they may go deeper into developing their own content, Netflix is still in a position to rebound stronger than ever. Sure they’ve made mistakes, but making themselves the unofficial home of Zombie television with the acquisition of the Walking Dead is certainly a step in the right direction. We’ll just have to sit back and wait until the months roll on to discover HOW big.

Jace has decided to take advantage of his co-hosting duties at the Sony Online Entertainment Fan Faire celebration, by showing his new music video to the thousands of EverQuest players in attendance, much to the dismay of the crowd. That didn’t stop one enthusiastic guest from doing something radical.
