First, the good: Packed to the brim with breasts, babes, Barbarians, swords, laser guns, and evil green marbles, “Heavy Metal” was a fantasy magazine envisioned by the French (who else?) and originally called the not-very-sexy-sounding Metal Hurlant.
It was also the inspiration for the classic 1981 animated film of the same name, which I stumbled upon as a wee lad after my dad received a month’s free subscription to HBO — scarring me with all sorts of horrible death sequences as well as my very first pair of cartoon boobs (epic win). They were good enough to warrant several accidental stumbles back.
And now, some 30 + years later, the French have decided to make their magazine (which is now owned by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles creator Kevin Eastman by the way) into a television show, Metal Hurlant Chronicles, which is adapted from stories within the original graphic novels.
The good news is that it’s got Michael Jai White, originally one of about 50 dudes who got killed by the Joker in The Dark Knight but has now grown into one of today’s most prominents actors with his role of Jax Briggs in the online series Mortal Kombat Legacy).
It also looks to feature plenty of cleavage and girls in chains. If that’s not enough to toot your horn, Rutger Hauer (The Hitcher, Hobo With A Shotgun), Scott Adkins (“The Expendables 2″) and Joe Flanigan (“Stargate Atlantis) round out a solid cast of established actors.
The trailer below certainly seems to look the part, and sounds like something Hans Simmer could have put together in his sleep. The series will pique the interest of the fan who enjoyed Mortal Kombat Legacy, 300, or anything else that involves a helluva a lot of action and not too much dialogue, it would appear.

Logan Huffman wants to know who is posting comments about him online and asks Jace for help. Meanwhile Joe Flanigan is caught again flirting in the V costume. Jace heads to the set of Law and Order: SVU to catch up with Ice – T and Coco and the Starcraft II team gets “rushed” by World of Warcraft Lead Designer, Jeff Kaplan.
Jace has decided to take advantage of his co-hosting duties at the Sony Online Entertainment Fan Faire celebration, by showing his new music video to the thousands of EverQuest players in attendance, much to the dismay of the crowd. That didn’t stop one enthusiastic guest from doing something radical.
