Last week there was a rumored 99$ Xbox to be revealed according to The Verge’s anonymous sources.
Today Microsoft has confirmed that it will be selling a $99 Xbox bundled with Kinect.
The bundle will ship with a 4GB Xbox 360, Kinect, and will require a $14.99 per month Xbox Live Gold subscription for two-years. Much like we’re used to with our on-contract smartphones, Microsoft has also put in place termination fees for those who decide to skip out on the two-year commitment. The early termination fees go as follows: $250 for termination during the first three months of the contract, then a decrease of $12 per month for the duration. Unfortunately, a little math shows you’ll end up paying more in the long run with the $99 offer…
Several price breakdowns show that the overall cost for the two years will actually net you slightly more than the equivalent hardware and subscription otherwise. The subscription itself comes in at $360 for the two years. Then, with that added to the cost of the bundle itself, the total comes to $459.
Although slightly higher than the original $418, the bundle does allow those on a budget to get their foot in the door. Not to mention the $299 price tag for the same hardware without the subscription.

One small catch is that the $99 bundle will only be available at Microsoft Stores, which in theory may alienate those who aren’t within a reasonable proximity to one.
Microsoft is looking more and more well positioned in its attempt to take over the living room, especially with big things planned for E3 such as the announcement of its ‘Woodstock‘ streaming service.
Do you think this new bundle will help Microsoft take on its $99 set-top box competitors?
