Bethesda is introducing mounted combat to the already vast world of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as part of a brand new update. The new update and its new feature and big fixes is currently only part of the Steam Beta Update for PC users.
Bethesda announced the details about the new update on its blog today. Yes finally players will be able to engage in both melee and ranged combat while riding a horse. The “highly-requested feature that was” shown breifly in the Skyrim Game Jam video is coming to gamers “by way of a free title update.”
“While we can’t share details on Dawnguard yet, we’re excited to announce another new feature making its way into the game… Mounted Combat!”
We previously reported to you on added Skyrim features including Kinect support and the popular new kill cameras, we also see some bug fixes for these in this update.
Mounted Combat is already available for those who opted into the latest Steam Beta Update. At this time there is no details on when console users will see the update, but we are certain that they will indeed see it at some point, hopefully soon. Below are the 1.6 Update’s release notes:

Fixed issue where certain creatures and NPCs would fail to respawn properly
Fixed rare issue with dialogue subtitles not displaying properly
Fixed issue with water appearing blurry when loading a saved game after creating a save underwater
Fixed issue where map cursor would occasionally disappear after closing a message box with Kinect enabled (Xbox 360)
Fixed rare issue with shouts only performing the first level and not other unlocked levels with Kinect enabled (Xbox 360)
Fixed issue where the shout buttons would stop working properly if users mashed LB and RB during cooldown with Kinect enabled (Xbox 360)
