OUYA has stirred up quite a buzz over the last few weeks with its incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign and its new take on “console” gaming.
Today Square Enix has confirmed that its classic RPG Final Fantasy III will be released for the new Android based console.
Final Fantasy III will be a launch title for the Ouya which is expected to release in March 2013. The title will be “fully optimized” for the platform and will have a free demo available.
FF III was initially released in Japan in 1999 and then made its way across the pond in 2006 with its Nintendo DS release in North America. A version of the game is also currently availabe for Android devices.

In a climate where players are unsure how well the Ouya will be supported by major game publishers, news regarding Square’s involvement on the platform is encouraging. According to IGN not only will Square be contributing Final Fantasy III to the mix, the company also said in a statement translated by Square Portal that it promises to provide more content for the Ouya in the future.
We previously reported to you on the Ouya and OnLive partnership which will bring hundreds of high quality titles from over 80 major game publishers, Square’s support will mark the first major third party publisher to back the project, this could see many of the others follow suit.
The Ouya Kickstarter campaign has eclipsed its original goal with almost $6 million raised now.
