Pokéholics Anonymous, a short put together by comedy team underbellyshow, plays sort of like a mockumentary, assembled largely from Pokémon cartoon footage/fan conventions/trade shows. It tells the story of several poor Pokémon addicted-souls who must enter a Pokémon rehab facility that looks maybe a step above some back room AA meeting in a rec center.
The main character in this case is Francis/Frank, a dude who’s sort of modeled around the cartoon’s main character Ash Ketchum. Even his vernacular and behavior has grown into a carbon copy of Ash’s, which is pretty much just insipid blathering. But the great thing about underbellyshow‘s short is how it really captures the sentiment a lot of Pokemon lovers — and haters — have probably felt or a long time.
What started essentially as a gimmicky Nintendo video game and eventually sprawled into a giant anime/marketing phenomenon, Pokémon made a lot of people a lot of money, and underbelly seems hip to everything that arose as a result — from what many felt was half-assed storytelling to even more obnoxious marketing ploys. The characters are pretty f*cking hilarious, just because they can’t even remember their own real names (only their Pokémon ones) and because of the epic flashback scenes. (Gengar’s is worth the watch alone.) Being that there’s no shortage of insipid fads out there, one can only hope that they find something equally funny, fast. How about those Bronies? Logan Huffman wants to know who is posting comments about him online and asks Jace for help. Meanwhile Joe Flanigan is caught again flirting in the V costume. Jace heads to the set of Law and Order: SVU to catch up with Ice – T and Coco and the Starcraft II team gets “rushed” by World of Warcraft Lead Designer, Jeff Kaplan.
Jace has decided to take advantage of his co-hosting duties at the Sony Online Entertainment Fan Faire celebration, by showing his new music video to the thousands of EverQuest players in attendance, much to the dismay of the crowd. That didn’t stop one enthusiastic guest from doing something radical.
