Today in Tokyo at the 25 Anniversary Metal Gear event, Kojima productions showed off its Fox Engine with footage of something called Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. Although the details are still a little scarce this is indeed a game, not just a tech demo.
Based on the initial reactions across the web and from those that attended the event the footage was very impressive. As snake infiltrated a facility we got a chance to see how well the Fox Engine handled things like lighting, weather effects and textures.
Reports do put ‘Snake’ in the demo footage but it is unclear what snake we are seeing, another clone? Are we going back in time?
Like all of the major Metal Gear releases in the past, famed creator Hideo Kojima always adds a new element to the mix of stealth and action, and Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is no exception. Konami said this time around Kojima is introducing the idea of a “Game without Game Over”.
According to people who attended the event we saw snake sneaking around after making a stealth kill and then hop in a jeep while radioing in for evac support. This time around, and for the first time ever in the franchise, it looks as though Ground Zeroes is an open world game, forcing the player to take into consideration how to escape from an infiltrated facility as much as how to get in. Kojima hints at more than just helicopter evacuation support as well.
“This announcement is a challenge from Kojima Productions to the world,” said Hideo Kojima (via Kotaku).
Game localizer Mark McDonald from 8-4 tweeted this about the demo: “Snake crawled @ avoiding searchlights, killed guard, rode jeep, called in heli for evac. Sounds like MG, but the scale & atmosphere… Wow.”
McDonald also tweeted: “Demo of “Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes”, started w cutscene (all realtime), went into gameplay, open world, night, raining, base. AMAZING”
The demo was running on a current gen PC, although some are skeptical. Kojima says that the title is indeed being developed for current gen tech but also said that the Fox Engine’s flexibility allows it to transition into the next generation quite seamlessly.
Konami didn’t allow any photography of the demo at the event, so the only images we have so far are the one above and this image below.

That didn’t stop one enthusiastic guest from doing something radical.
