During an investors call yesterday (via The Guardian), Activision Publishing’s CEO Eric Hirshberg talked about how the next Call of Duty game “will bring meaningful innovation to the series.”
Unfortunately Hirshberg didn’t explain further, but for a game which is for the most part the same thing over and over again, his statement could mean big changes for the next CoD (Black Ops 2?).
We also learned that Call of Duty Elite 2.0 is coming with a future update promised by Activision execs during the call. As for Halo, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said, “We’re very excited about it – they are a superb developer; they’re going to deliver something exceptional.” The first game resulting from a 10-year deal with Bungie is expected to make an appearance at E3.
Hirshberg also took the stage this morning at the DICE summit to give a keynote discussing his non-traditional background in the industry (via AllThingsD). He also talked about the risk of bringing Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure to market– a new game that integrates real-world, physical toys– which the company is also now considering monetizing the online aspects of:
“It was scary, but if you truly have a breakthrough idea, then you have to have the confidence to treat it as one because they don’t come around very often…We knew a lot of things had to go right — the core to that was bringing the toys to life. We knew that was magical, and if we got it right, it would have huge potential. We had the whole package. We had a great game and a great story and then pushed with all of our might with a big marketing plan.”
