Apple updated the Steve Jobs memorial page on their site this morning to include a selection of tributes that were sent to the rememberingsteve@apple.com address they set up after his passing. The site notes that over a million people wrote in with stories and comments on how Jobs and his work at Apple changed their lives. The selection of comments continuously changes, but here’s a few we found moving when visiting the page:
He was my hero
Steve inspired me. As someone who grew up using Macs, I was always keenly aware of the difference passion, humanism, and art make in any endeavor. He poured all of these into his products, and showed the world that success and human values go hand in hand. He will always be my hero.
Mourning a personal loss
Steve shaped my life in many ways. I’ve followed him since the early 80s and have always been in awe of his creative genius. He changed the way we live, work, entertain, and educate ourselves, by giving us the first computer that was really personal, and allowing us to conceive music, communications and books in an entirely different manner. His commencement speech at Stanford a few years back is a must listen/read for all. I can’t help but feel his passing as a personal loss and my only wish is that his genius continues to live on through the fantastic company he created. Long live Apple!
As previously announced by CEO Tim Cook in the letter below, Apple will be holding a memorial for Steve Jobs at Apple headquarters in Cupertino today. In addition to that event, which as far as we know is only for Apple employees, Apple stores across the country will close today from 12-3 EST (9-12 PST). Apple employees will be able to view a live webcast of the memorial in Cupertino during that time. The company has just finished putting up white curtains over the Apple store’s glass panels for privacy. There is no word whether or not the celebration of Jobs life will be made available to Apple fans around the world at a later date.
Team,
Like many of you, I have experienced the saddest days of my lifetime and shed many tears during the past week. But I’ve found some comfort in the extraordinary number of tributes and condolences from people all over the world who were touched by Steve and his genius. And I’ve found comfort in both telling and listening to stories about Steve.
Although many of our hearts are still heavy, we are planning a celebration of his life for Apple employees to take time to remember the incredible things Steve achieved in his life and the many ways he made our world a better place. The celebration will be held on Wednesday, October 19, at 10 a.m. in the outdoor amphitheater on the Infinite Loop campus. We’ll have more details on AppleWeb closer to the date, including arrangements for employees outside of Cupertino.I look forward to seeing you there.
Tim
