BBC Tracks Down and Confronts Racist, Internet Troll

When you hear someone talking about hunting a troll named Nimrod Severn, you might think that they were relaying an MMORPG experience (or maybe, if they’re old school, a game of Zork).

In this case, however, it’s about one BBC investigative reporter’s quest to hunt down a particularly offensive — and very real — Internet troll. Knowing full well there’s plenty of guys like this out there, we don’t advise you doing this on your own. But in this particular case, found on Geekologie, offender Nimrod Severn is actually a guy named Darren Burton.

He also happens to be a racist punk who trolls others’ facebook pages and leaves some pretty horrible comments, especially on memorial pages for those who have died.

For instance, when a tribute page is created to a rapper Dolla, who was shot back in 2009, Sevren posts on the page that he’s a “filthy n*gger.” When foreign exchange student Anuj Bidve was killed by a vicius skinhead and a Facebook page was created in his memory, Severn posted “rot in piss.”

You get the point. So, when said investigative reporter received an anonymous trip from a trolling expert as to Severn’s whereabouts, he decided to track him down.

His reaction is predictably cowardly and indignant. It’s still not clear how Burton got off so lightly –  trolling is often something not taken lightly in the U.K. (Almost as disturbing is seeing Darren wheeling around what seems to be his kid in a stroller, beside someone who looks like his wife.) “That’s what a troll looks like,” the reporter concludes, as Nimrod is whisked off by bus. While hardly a satisfying conclusion, a small ray of hope comes in knowing other trolls like him will see it.
