Though Lulzsec may have vanished in the background, Anonymous has taken up the flag of operation #Anonsec—but that’s chump change compared to the storm that’s been rumbling in Great Britain in the last few days. If you thought Lulzsec’s shenanigans were pretty rough, they’ve got nothing on Rupert Murdoch’s British Newspaper News of the World, which was forced to shut down over a huge scandal its propagated.
That scandal? Hacking into people’s cell phones, and listening to and stealing their voice mails.
More on that outrage in a moment–first, Anonymous. The faceless, headless, V-For-Vendetta worshipping hackers targeted Booz Allen Hamilton today, a Military contractor that was targeted for its involvement in a recent surveillance minor-scandal. Anonymous managed to make off with 90,000 military-related email accounts and passwords–not just of Booz Allen employees, but military employees staffed at US CENTCOM and SOCOM, as well as other military departments. The long and the short of it–if you were to hop over to bittorent right now, you could peek at some very high-level government and contractor employees talking shit about Steve from last Friday’s meeting.
But believe like we said before–that’s the boring hacking news this week. Here’s the good stuff.
THE PLAYERS: Rupert Murdoch, who owns News Corp, who owns News of the World. Various British politicians, celebrities, soldiers, and the family of murdered teenager Milly Dower.
THE CRIME: News of the World reporters hacking into various voicemails to gain exclusive access to breaking news, or, in the case of Milly Dower’s family, to spy on her family and report sensationalist information.
THE STORY: A couple of years ago, News of the World was accused of hacking into various celebrities’ voicemails and were forced to settle in a lawsuit. All well and good. But it was recently revealed that they’d also targeted the cell phone belonging to then-missing teenage girl Milly Dower. It would be one thing if they’d just listened in, but they decided to go one step farther. When the voicemail box filled up, they deleted messages, so that her family would think that she was listening to them, and just couldn’t reply. They then proceeded to SCORE AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE FAMILY TALKING ABOUT HOW HOPEFUL THEY WERE.
And it gets worse. New rumblings are saying they may have tried to pull the same bullshit on 9/11 victims, and on dead british soldiers. Ladies and gentlemen, meet our scumbags of the day, and may you mock them for all eternity.
