Details are still scarce on why exactly Australian studio THQ was shut down and consequently forced to abandon work on The Avengers video game. Even more annoying is how footage from the game recently leaked, and Marvel wasted no time in putting the kabash on even that. Fortunately we’ve gotten our grubby little paws on some, and here’s what we were able to dig up.
Despite footage being yanked as quickly as it gets posted, fans have still posted plenty of screen grabs. As Comic Book Resources deftly remarks, the unique thing about THQ’s spin on the classic team of comic book heroes was that it provided a first-person shooter feel to it all. Despite that, it might have been the look of the characters — which paid more of a tribute to the classic “Ultimates” versions of the heroes, and not so much the look of the 2012 movie.
Don’t know about you but I always thought it’d be cool to be able to feel like I was really SMASHING The Skrulls when I was the Hulk, or firing laser beams out of my palms as Iron Man, or even (sigh) yes, throwing my shield as Captain America.
There’s still no word on whether Marvel will pick up with the original game blueprint or be forced to go in an entirely different direction. According to official Marvel spokespersons, “The company is in early stages of exploring potential publishing and licensing opportunities.” Which makes it sound pretty hopeless.
Would a first person-shooter approach have been cool? Or should we just revert back to the classic arcade look?
