Most of the industry expect Apple to follow its usual iPad release window and make an announcement in March with customers getting their hands on the device shortly after. Today we get some solid confirmation from the typically accurate AllThingsD who say Apple will indeed be hosting an event for the next-gen iPad during the first week of March. Here’s what to expect.
First of all there have been some rumors that the device will be dubbed the iPad 2S, or something else, opposed to iPad 3. Most rumors back up a much better HD display, more powerful processor and GPU, but leaked casings from 9to5Mac for the device suggest a largely unchanged design. Those same casings, however, also point towards an upgraded camera. The report from AllThingsD, who cite “a source familiar with the device”, also backed up most of those rumored specs including a 2048×1536 Retina Display.
You’ll inevitably start seeing some deals for iPad 2 in the coming weeks, but if you can hold off, you’re likely to get a much improved iPad at the same price the iPad 2 is selling for now. That is considering Apple’s new models in most product lines typically takes the price of the models before it– like iPhone and iPod.
Not surprisingly, Apple declined to comment. The report said the announcement will be made in San Francisco at one of Apple’s “trademark special events”. Pre-orders and shipments of the next-gen iPad would begin in the weeks following. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
