Say what you will about Kevin Smith’s past few movies — Cop-Out got a sh*tstorm of hate from critics and longtime KS fans alike, while Red State got both equal amounts of love and loathing — he’s been pretty stalwart about refusing to take himself seriously. I met him at a smodcast a couple years back, and it’s rare that a guy will take time to hang out and shoot the shit with pretty much everyone waiting to meet him, not to mention really put his money where his mouth is and devote himself to comic book fandom.
Slashfilm is reporting that Smith’s jumping into the surging reality show TV market and maybe even do something good with it: AMC’s ‘Comic Book Men’ will take an in-depth look at the different characters who frequent Smith’s Jersey comic book shop.
Marketed as a cross between Pawn Stars and Comic Book Movie, ‘Men’ will take us inside the minds of dedicated comic book aficionados, many of whom pride themselves on being geeks and even revel in it. “Never think you’re gonna hold the first appearance of Wonder Woman in your hands,” quips one geek over the issue in his hands in the trailer, “or as a comic book collector even hold a woman.” Surely in an age where it’s become more fiscally and socially enterprising to go geek, guys and girls alike can relate to that statement.
The upside: CBM could be the closest we get to a real-life Clerks, albeit without Dante and Randall — and who better than Smith to be the mastermind?
The down: don’t tell us that ‘men’ means ‘no chicks’ for this one. Everyone knows female comic book fans are becoming almost as prevalent as men, and really, the last thing a bunch of comic book geeks want is a total sausage fest. There’s a reason so many comic book artists draw girls like this.
Hope this one fares better than Smith recent ventures, if only because we still love the guy for his 1994 black and white original.
