For all of the classic console titles being rereleased on Xbox Live and PSN, it’s nice to see some older titles that had their roots in the arcades getting some love too. If a filing with the Australian government’s Classification Board is to be believed, Konami’s The Simpsons Arcade Game might finally be heading to a console near you.
With the filing (first spotted by the guys at XBLA Fans) listing Backbone Entertainment as the developer alongside Konami as publisher, it’s pretty clear this will be a faithful port of the original 1991 game most us spent countless hours with. The company most recently released Konami’s X-Men: The Arcade Game on both PS3 and Xbox 360.
If you’re unaware, Backbone is responsible for too many quality XBLA ports to name, some of which include Frogger, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage 2, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Some of their titles have landed on PSN as well.
The closest we’ve gotten to a port of the beloved side-scrolling, beat ‘em up seen in the video below is a 2009 “The Simpsons Arcade” title released by EA on iOS. That title wasn’t exactly a faithful port, in fact, it was pretty much a completely different game. It’s definitely worth the $0.99, but it’s far from what you’ll remember playing in the arcades and disappointed fans of Konami’s original title when it was released.
Speaking of iOS, Backbone is also behind Konami’s release of the classic X-Men arcade game for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, according to intomobile. The government filing doesn’t list any specific platforms, but rather “multi-platform”, indicating potential for the game to hit PSN, iOS and Android in addition to Backbone’s usual XBLA releases.
This has of course sent the mobile-centric sites into a speculation frenzy, but we can’t blame them on this one.
