Hell yes!
Lots of speculation has been running rampant over the last week or so about the possibility of another system launching. Normally, I might brush over this, except I remember running across a few websites where anonymous sources were quoted as saying Nintendo wanted to try and re-acquire some of the “hardcore gaming” demographic.
That’s what excites me.
Frankly, up until the Wii, every Nintendo system I played had a very strong tendency to simply outclass the other systems. Specifically, the quality of games released for the system.
That isn’t to say the Wii doesn’t have great games, they just don’t compel me to go out and buy the system. Nintendo greatly, and I mean GREATLY, widened their target audience, and much to their benefit (see numbers above), but in doing that they pretty much left the original demographic behind.
Let’s compare the kind of games that were top-sellers in SNES, N64, Gamecube, and Wii. I think you’ll see the difference.
SNES: Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Kart, Street Fighter II, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country 2, Star Fox.
Nintendo 64: Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye 007, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Smash Bros. Star Fox 64
Gamecube: Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Super Mario Sunshine, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime
Wii: Wii Sports, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit, New Super Mario Bros. Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Party 8
See how it changed? Granted, they know what the hell they’re doing, considering the top six sellers on the Wii system shipped a combined approximate 2 billion (that’s billion…with a B) copies.
They were great games with wonderful family appeal. But when Nintendo put its focus on the original gamer demographic, they came out with some timeless games. I mean, GoldenEye. C’mon!
Not only that, but some great RPGs fell more on Nintendo’s side of the fence than any of the others, probably until the release of the PS1, though that’s just my opinion.
Also, as a side note, they released a damn invitation. It’s as though we’re being invited to a ballroom dance, and ought to don our evening’s best. How classy. Wonder who could learn from this…
Although unconfirmed, the rumor is the new console will be named The Stream and include “screen stream technology.” Whatever they end up calling it, I’m excited to see Nintendo moving on from the Wii and going back to its old gaming roots.
