According to a report from MacRumors, the latest update to Atari’s Greatest Hits app for iOS includes a hint to an upcoming hardware peripheral for iPad that Atari plans on making “available soon”.
The discovered description links to a page on Discovery Bay Games with the above image of the official ”Atari Arcade Duo Powered” joystick accessory and includes the following description:
“Relive the fast-action excitement of all your arcade favorites, like Asteroids, Centipede, and Missile Command.
Simply connect your iPad to Atari’s Greatest Hits app for Duo, and you’re ready to share the fun with family and friends anywhere!”
We’re assuming the Atari Arcade utilizes bluetooth rather than the iPad’s dock connector, and if so appears to support both landscape and portrait orientations. The device does have some competition with the $99 iCade accessory, which much closer resembles a retro cabinet (and definitely wins points for nostalgia).
The good news is there will be no shortage of content for the accessory, as the $15 Greatest Hits app contains over 100 classic titles from Atari Arcade and the 2600. We’ll let you know when we learn more on pricing and availability.
