No, it’s not the latest nerdcore group. No, it’s not digital avatars. It’s Spotify. It’s the first legitimate competitor to Apple’s iTunes, and it’s about to crash into the states and rock your world. For those not in the know, Spotify is a music-streaming service formed in Stockholm (Sweden, for our non-internationally inclined readers) that has built up over one million paid subscribers to its service since its foundation–and that’s not even taking in the numbers of people trying out the service for free, which has a pretty generous offer.
What is that service you ask? Streaming music–any music–(so long as the label has made a deal with Spotify). When you listen for free, you have to deal with ads and a slightly slower bit rate on the playback, but when you foot the subscription fee, you get no ads, fast streaming, and all the music you want. It’s like a beautiful marriage between iTunes, Zune, and Pandora. It also will stream this music to any device–iPhone, Android, computer, what have you.
The reason it hadn’t opened up to U.S customers yet is for the same reason International customers can’t use Netflix without a proxy to a U.S server–the people who own the content didn’t have deals set up to play in this country yet. But Spotify has leapt that hurdle! (And by some coincidence, Netflix has also begun to clear those gaps…)
Want in on it? Sign up here to be notified when they start opening up the service on our red-white-and-blue shores. (As…opposed to the other red-white-and-blue shores it already operates on.)
