We’ve seen some pretty incredible Minecraft creations before– like these epic Steve Jobs tributes and this recreation of our own Jace Hall.
Not content on just walking around the real world, Mario has made his way into the Minecraft universe thanks to a lot of hard work of three dedicated players and more than 18 million in-game blocks.
Kotaku points us to the stop motion video of Game Boy title Super Mario Land seen below created entirely in Minecraft by 21-year-old James Wright, 29-year-old Joe Ciappa, and 29-year-old Tempusmori.
After creating a replica Game Boy 160 x 144 blocks, the crew had the perfect setting to recreate classic Gameboy titles with a single block representing one in-game pixel. This is how they do it:
First, the guys have to get their source material by playing and recording the original Game Boy title using an emulator.
Next, the video gets broken down into single frames, allowing them to rebuild each one in Minecraft. As you’ll see from the making of video below, this consists of shifting a ton of blocks left to right (with a lot of pixel counting and red stone markers).
The guys then take screenshots of each frame they recreate in the game, drop them into a video editor, and set each to run for 0.165 seconds to create the effect.

“What you see is 100 percent Minecraft…Every pixel on the screen is one wool block. The screen itself is on a giant Game Boy. We build each screen take a screenshot from above. After the picture we move everything that needs moving for the next screen and repeat.
This isn’t the first epic Minecraft build the crew is behind…below you’ll see a couple of their first projects including recreations of Bomberman and Space Invaders.
