So here’s a case where internet celebrity turned against an unfortunate WoW gamer. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the story of Swifty.
Who is Swifty? He’s a mild World of Warcraft celebrity who’s gained a youtube following of over 170,000 subscribers. According to his own beta, he’s a Game tester, usually playing in Closed betas, who got a start on youtube making tutorials and showing tips and tricks for Gamers. He seems like a pretty nice dude–he’s good at what he does and he wants to help people out. So why on earth would he get banned for crashing a server?
Well he didn’t exactly mean to. Swifty and his pals were livestreaming one of his tutorials, so everyone could watch from home. Unfortunately, his fans also were able to see his live location in the game, and decided to follow him around and watch him on his own realm. (Which, of course, is kind of redundant giving he was already livestreaming the event but okay whatever.)
And…what happens when you put some several hundred–possibly thousand WoW players in the same place? You crash a realm server. That’s what happens.
So yeah. The realm went down. And since that’s a violation of WoW’s Terms of Service, Swifty got banned. A guy who tried to help other WoW’ers out and was rewarded in kind. (though to the people who mobbed him in-game come on guys, you couldn’t think something like that would happen?)
Luckily, Swifty has friends! And fans! And people protesting for him! No, seriously, check out this protest. It’s kind of cool.
Welcome to WoW guys—where people will fight for their fellow gamer.
(Do you have some great mass-server stories from World of Warcraft or other games? We’d like to hear them! Be it the Geddon bombs from Molten Core or the Ahn’Qiraj gate dramas, send em our way and we’ll share the best ones!)
