Epic Games just announced that the Unreal Development Kit Beta, released yesterday, now includes support for Mac OS X. This will see games running on Mac OS using Unreal Engine 3, much like the company has done with iOS titles on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The update also brings added support for iOS…
“Unreal Engine 3 supports developing for Apple’s Macintosh platform for easy cross-platform distribution. The development process is virtually identical for games to be run on the Mac platform, but the packaging and deployment process does require some additional steps.”
While the recently released beta only includes a preview of the planned Mac OS X support, it does bring support for all UDK games. We’re not sure what this means for Gears of War and Unreal Tournament, which were promised but never showed up on OS X, but we’re optimistic this means you will start to experience an influx of great UDK developed titles hitting the Mac App Store.
The beta also brings enhancements to iOS including enabling multi-display support over AirPlay or HDMI. You can check out a full list of what’s new in the latest UDK beta here.
This comes on the heels of Epic bringing iOS support to Unreal Engine, which was showcased in their initial release Infinity Blade.
Gameloft’s upcoming N.O.V.A 3 is also expected to utilize Unreal Engine 3.
