After the horrific showing in our viral video department and the mess that was Kim Kardashian’s divorce taking over the internet, we went out looking for a sign that mankind hadn’t taken one giant step towards self-destruction.
We came up with this, an inspiring clip with a positive message that shows people aren’t miserable and do indeed still like each other, despite corruption, marital affairs, and other political controversies that would provide evidence to the contrary.
Trent Glaze, (certainly sounds like a sports name) is an Ohio High school student that has been bound to a wheelchair for the past 10 years. Despite all of this, he’s always had one dream: to score a touchdown in a football game.
For the past several years, Glaze has been at every practice and every team function, spending most of the time as the team manager. This year, Glaze’s Senior year, Coach Tom McCurdy invited him to be on the team — and to be a team captain.
“He’s a good kid, and he deserves it, and I love him dearly,” McCurdy said.
Not only was he named captain, he was given the chance to play one final play in his team’s recent game.
Glaze lined up in the backfield, and on the snap, took the handoff from quarterback Josh Stewart, and eventually rushed it into the endzone.
Both teams congratulated him at the end of the game. I told the coach I want to go out with a bang,” “I’m just so proud of the team,” he said. “I just can’t explain it right now.”
There will of course be those that say the touchdown didn’t count, mainly because according to the box score, it didn’t (the play “occurred” while the game was over).
In my experience at any high school, college, or professional sporting event, I’ve realized that the final score or result of the game doesn’t really matter in the bigger picture. Life is still life. Work is still work. Scores don’t matter.
All I remember are the moments where someone pushed themselves to the limit or never stopped believing that something was possible –be it grinding out a four yard run that was supposed to be a 6 yard loss, or running in a touchdown when that person couldn’t even run.
In a world where some people have decided to only play for their own side, we have two teams that acknowledged one boy’s dream…to show everyone that there was nothing holding him back. He’s not only part of the team, he’s the CAPTAIN.
I can’t help but find that refreshing.
