Some of you may have heard about Jack Tretton’s out of context quote on a number of other websites. However, it took me an actual ten minutes to find the article itself with the right google search. I rather like context.

“”Our view of the ‘Game Boy experience’ is that it’s a great babysitting tool, something young kids do on airplanes, but no self-respecting twenty-something is going to be sitting on an airplane with one of those,” he says. “He’s too old for that.”” -Fortune magazine interview
Ok. There are two things wrong with this quote, other than the fact he has no room to bash another console openly. (In the link: Scroll down further to confirm that Sony comes in last in every single sales competition)
First off, let’s address what the entire internet is going crazy over. This one is, and should be, obvious. You never, ever, should bash or denigrate someone who has even a tangential interest in your sales demographic. That would be like Baskin-Robbins releasing a statement that says “Only fatties eat Luigi’s silly Italian Ice.” (Interestingly enough, BR founder Irv Robbins’ son did just that).
We in the gamer community already tend to have a plethora of stigma to work against. The “stereotype” of the gamer has evolved into someone who sits on the couch all day with hookah, pot, and plenty of orange colored snack foods near by. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but the stereotype is far from correct. If you’re reading this, you already know that.
But apparently Jack Tretton doesn’t.
Seriously, what kind of CEO puts out a statement saying a particular subset of gamers should be ashamed of themselves? Oh, he’s developing his own handheld you say? I guess he’s trying to tell us that while he believes we’d feel inferior staring down at Nintendo’s tiny little handheld screen, we wouldn’t feel any of this staring down at Sony’s tiny little handheld screen. Right?
Obviously his comments are tongue in cheek. I get that. He’s playing off of an impression of what he believes Nintendo’s chief clientele are. Last year, however, IGN released their list of top 2010 DS games. Included on the list are: a mario side-scroller, Mario Kart, A Castlevania sequel, a Legend of Zelda game, Tetris, A Dragon Quest sequel, and a GTA sequel.
I know I’d be totally ashamed playing games that cover just about every single demographic out there.
He’s also gliding over a whole subset of games that we’d be down right proud of playing in a crowded bus. Have you ever played Brain Age? First time I picked it up I played it for a couple of hours, easy. It’s fun, somewhat addictive, and you feel better for playing it. And Japanese! You can learn Japanese on this thing.
(Obviously fictional scenario)
Jack Tretton: “Hey twenty-something, shouldn’t you be using something more your age?”
Bet he didn’t see that coming.
You know what? We usually add these pictures, add a funny caption, and then glide right over them. Not this time. GTA is hardly a game any twenty-something would be embarrassed to play, but it is a game you wouldn’t dare let near a child. Bringing us to my second point about how this quote is ridiculous. This is the thing that really, more than anything else in this article, grinds my gears.
“Our view of the ‘Game Boy experience’ is that it is a great baby-sitting tool.”
While I can understand that gaming has sort of evolved into a de-facto “give mommy a break” tool (as with any other hobby), calling it a “baby-sitter” in any degree is a bit of a hot-spot for me. Enter semantics.
Would my parents have planted me in front of a console and left the house? Hell no. I have 7 nephews and nieces, would either of my siblings do the same with their kids? Hell no. Do my nephews/nieces game as a hobby? Yes. Did I? Clearly. This may be a bit semantical of a road to go down, but when a parent leaves the rearing of their child to an electronic device, problems can, and will, occur in the future.
Here come the parental neglect links:
One study: Anti-social behavior. Violent behavior. Issues with Concentration. Depression in teenage girls.
Two study: Critical factors in childhood development, and how over-reliance on technology deprives the child of them.
Red study: Lists a smattering of long-term side effects of a child being neglected / alienated from a parent.
Blue study: A government website listing yet another smattering of repercussions of neglect.
(not all of the above are studies, but often cite studies or are from reliable sources, like, say, the government)
For a CEO of a company to call any piece of diversionary entertainment a great baby-sitting tool is absolutely irresponsible on their part. It makes me want to walk into the living room of an abandoned child, give them a hug, and invite them to play a game of catch outside.
All in all the remainder of the article is a pretty nice piece about the goals and specifics of the handheld, and it truly does seem to take handhelds to another level, just based off the specs. But then again, the PS3 is a few leaps ahead, hardware-wise, than it’s other competitors, and that doesn’t seem to have been the deciding factor. Hopefully, Sony will learn a thing or two from Nintendo before it releases the NGP.
Like, perhaps, social grace.
