Apple today introduced a developer preview of its next major operating system for Macs called OS X  10.8 Mountain Lion. While the “Mountain Lion” moniker follows on with Apple’s tradition of naming OS releases after cats, one big change to the name is the omission of “Mac”. Apple is dropping the “Mac” from “Mac OS X”, a big change for the operating system that has used “Mac OS” as its identify for 10+ years.

The move is parter of a larger change for Apple and OS X that sees the entire operating system merging with the work done on the iOS operating system for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Mountain Lion incorporates many features that Keep Reading

Programmed and designed during his tenure at Yale University, Karateka became well-known for its realistic animations and immersive musical cues.

First released on the Apple II and later for the Atari ST, Commodore 64, Famicom and the Game Boy among others, Karateka can be described as a side-scrolling fighter set in feudal Japan where the player is tasked to save the princess Mariko from the grasps of the games antagonist Akuma. We told you the other day that Apple was seemingly cracking down on knockoff apps in the App Store with some of the most popular clones from at least one developer recently being removed. It looks like Apple may have another issue on its hands with reports originating from this TouchArcade thread claiming developers are paying approximately $5000 to get in the Top 25 rankings of the App Store. In fact, up to eight apps in the top 25 were promoted by the same shady service employing bots to run up downloads and automatically rate apps.

The post comes from an iOS developer who was in search of a way of promoting his new app when coming across an ad network who guaranteed to get it in the Top 25 for $5000. When questioning the ad network on exactly how they can accomplish this, the developer said the company openly explained its process: Keep Reading

We’ve seen Siri taking on new personalities before– First we had the voice-control feature in iPhone 4S rapping along to Notorious B.I.G’s ‘Hypnotize’ at Music Hack Day 2011, and before that the guy’s at College Humor re-imagined Siri with a dose of reality. It was even given a new voiceover courtesy of Portal’s GLaDOS for a parody of Apple’s launch ad for the feature. However, today’s re-imagining takes a different approach by turning Siri into the murderer in a spoof-horror, short-film entitled “Psycho Siri”.

Uploaded Andrew McMurry and crew on the Andrewmfilms YouTube channel, the film starts off with a man trying out a new iPhone 4S he happened to recently find and before he knows it his friend is dead and he’s running for his life from an AK-47, grenade wielding iPhone 4S with Siri calling the shots. Conan’s past Apple-related sketches have for the most part been received well by Apple fans. First we had  a fake iPad 2 ad following the launch of the iPad 2, then a sketch in protest of the controversial changes made in Final Cut Pro X, and more recently a video mocking rumors of a lost iPhone 5 prototype. However, this week’s Apple sketch from Conan is getting a lot of backlash.

In light of recent controversies related to Foxconn suicides and the working conditions in Apple’s supply chain, Conan’s latest sketch introducing a revolutionary suicide prevention net might be going too far… Keep Reading

There are always bugs in just about every release of software, and the iOS firmware running on iPhones is no different.
