Nerdcore Helps Richie Branson Resurrect Toonami

Thursday, 17th May 2012

It wasn’t enough that nerdcore sensation Richie Branson spearheaded an underground campaign to revive Toonami. Other fans did it their own way:  the usual posts on Adult Swim messageboards/forums; maybe tweeting with AS-oriented hashtags, endless letters of complaint…pretty much everything short of picketing with signs outside Cartoon Network Headquarters.

But by releasing several odes to various anime franchises, especially Mobile Suit Gundam, Branson’s attracted the attention of Japanimation fans worldwide. And it was his plea and tribute to the long forgotten network programming which made the topic of Toonami’s resurrection an Internet-wide sensation. Keep Reading

1-Up Lives The Nerdcore Paradise

While it may seem like MC Chris and MC Frontalot are the center of the nerdcore universe, 1-Up is an artist who, while maybe not packing the production value that comes with those guys, still manages to make pretty entertaining songs/videos.  Upon first seeing that it was ‘Gangster’s Paradise‘ he’s parodying, it may prompt a quick running to the hills (how can anyone possibly hold a candle to Weird Al’s version?!).

But 1-Up presents himself as one of the most authentic nerdcore artists, especially in this unabashed salute to comics, games, and Nintendo.

Witness his lair/man-cave, adorned with all things Nintendo. Regret not having taken better care of your comic book collection as he unveils his massive display of Transformers back issues.  Keep Reading

Richie Branson Wants His Toonami Back (And So Do We)

Human nerdcore dynamo Richie Branson has penned yet another little ditty, again oriented around the anime universe. This time, instead of an ode to a particular series or anime legend, he’s doing it for a noble cause: to BRING TOONAMI BACK.

Perhaps with good reason — scarcely anything’s been heard from the Adult Swim peeps since exactly a month ago, when they hinted at the possibility with a couple of tweets, one of which read, “We’re listening.” Keep Reading

We Rock Nerdlife: Kirby Krackle Talks The Future of NERD Music

Monday, 7th May 2012
Posted in Blog Archive, NERDCORE
Tags: Kirby Krackle, nerd music, nerd rock, nerdcore, seattle band

While driving to work today, listening to the pangs of Rihanna echo through my radio, I couldn’t help but think there’s got to be something else/another choice. I turned to another station and got less of Rihanna, but more of the same…some girl probably too young to drive saying that ‘she’d call me’…maybe (I wait with baited breath).

Despite the rather monotonous and homogenous tunes filling the proverbial airwaves, I find solace in knowing that once I have an internet connection, I can fill the void of my music woes with nerd rockers like Kirby Krackle (I don’t listen to Jace Hall at the office…his music at least).

In an effort to expand the gamer/geek lifestyle Keep Reading

Hot Or Not…Goth People Have Problems, Too

Thursday, 3rd May 2012
Posted in Blog Archive, NERDCORE, Online Video

What happens when you combine goths, vampires, and Magic the Gathering? For those of you who said Tim Burton, you’d be half right (please cite any and all Magic The Gathering references, below).

If you’re Karla Von Guerram your answer to the above comes in the form of Going Nowhere Show Productions of “Goth Problems,” starring the synth sounds of Plushgun.

The video was inspired and subesquently parodies “Hot Problems” the music video starring two girls who ironically aren’t hot, yet apparently Keep Reading

Happy Ending: Mass Effect Fan Shows Her Love In Tribute Video

We’ll be honest and say we weren’t familiar with Malukah until fan of the Jace Hall Show David Allen sent us this video.

Judging by the nice reception the video has received, the new Mass Effect 3 tribute video, Reignite, lots more people probably will soon.

She’s clearly a triple-threat, playing guitar, piano, and writing this original song from scratch. Not to mention editing this, her tribute to what many keep calling one of the greatest sci-fi games ever — and, in particular, showing some serious love for Keep Reading

Nerdcore Meets Dubstep In Epic Tribute To Gaming

We know plenty of people in our audience are familiar with NERDCORE, for those of you who are not, unN00b yourself immediately or prepare to fall completely behind when Season 5 of The Jace Hall Show arrives in June.

But what about NERDCORE and DUBSTEP? Until now we haven’t heard or seen a compilation quite like this, but thanks to Jamison Stone, a fan of The Jace Hall Show who also runs Apotheosis Studios, we have rare footage of NERO performing their dubstep/nercore anthem “Me and You” live.

Stone witnessed the event Keep Reading

With the release of Halo 4 now only a few months away, aspiring Master Chiefers everywhere are salivating all over their X Boxes in anticipation…since the latest trailer having been played at the E3 conference last year, news has been (unfortunately) relatively scarce.

So for those hankering for any news they could get, MTV has released news that Massive Attack contributor/songwriter Neil Davidge is providing the soundtrack for the game. Keep Reading

3 Floppy Drives Play the Theme to Duke Nukem 3D (Plus, a Brief Summary of How They Did It)

If you haven’t had enough of these guys who love composing classic pop culture anthems from floppy disk drives, we have yet another one for you: the theme to Duke Nukem 3D, and all utilizing a nifty combination of Moppy and Arduino UNO. While you may have heard these terms before, chances may be you don’t know what the hell they mean/are exactly.

Here’s a brief explanation, as well as a link to how you can make your own floppy drive music.

First off, Moppy is simply a Java-coded program that will allow you to stream Keep Reading

‘Mass Effect Ending FAIL’ Gets Its Own MUSIC VIDEO

The general consensus seems to be that ME3′s ending is one of the lamest in recent gaming history. So in addition to all the forum arguments, angry tweets and general discontent, there’s also been a ton of parodies.

Fan/gamer/video maker Terence Jay is an active participant, as “Mass Effect 3 Ending FAIL (‘The Wanted’ parody”) proves. Here Jay adds another video to tribute the slew of vids mocking everything from the characters to Bioware’s alleged cop out ending to what many are even calling one of sci-fi’s greatest achievements.  Keep Reading

‘Wordburglar’ Teams With ‘More or Les’ to Drop “Rhyme O’ Clock”

Tuesday, 10th April 2012
Posted in Blog Archive, NERDCORE
Tags: Canada, hip hop, More or Les, Rhyme O Clock, Wordburglar

Follow @jeffnau
The most you’ve probably heard about Canada-based Wordburglar is that he started out in the Dregs of Society, which was a pretty big-albeit-still-underground hip-hop group, and penned their biggest hit,”Stuart”. A few years later, he’s garnered his own fair share of hits on the indie label Hand’Solo Records.

And while it may take a while for the specifically nerdcore lyrics to kick in, the video is right in your face with some classic nerdy pop culture imagery. In the official video for his single “Rhyme O’ Clock”, he’s paired here with fellow Toronto-ian rapper More or Les.  Which, so far as I can tell, is about two guys able to stop time sorta like that chick in that terrible 80′s sci-fi themed sitcom.

“A strong contender for the most likely-to-be-quoted rapper at the water cooler, Wordburglar’s lyrically potent oeuvre runs the gamut from thoughtfully casual Keep Reading

Rapper Surgeon General Makes Nerdcore Hardcore

Fishing around for nerdcore on the ‘net can be a seriously time-wasting experience.

Or, it can result in stumbling upon guys like Surgeon General, who seems to have brought a new edge to the genre. The General is less keen on tongue-in-cheek, nerd-friendly topics (aside from video games in general, we mean) then he is injecting a bit of the gangsta side to what he says — which in this case, is an unabashed love of all things Mortal Kombat: Keep Reading

$1.5 Million Worth of Robots Crank Out The Beatles’ “Come Together”

Thursday, 5th April 2012

Follow @jeffnau
Given that the Hubos — the working name of these 3 robots built by Drexel University research scientists — cost between $350 – 400,000 a piece to build, $1.5 million seems a kind estimate. It is however kinda cool that the scientists were given the robots for what might have been more ‘noble’  robotics experiments, before deciding to program these four to play a Beatles song.

Actually, the University was given 7 of these things, so maybe the other ones are off being programmed with Asimov’s 3 laws or something. Keep Reading

Yes, we have something of a checkered past here with Felicia Day — namely, one Baby Jesus, but this latest endeavor from Felicia and the rest of her friends at the Guild receives two very enthusaistic thumbs up from The Jace Hall Show.

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of music videos focusing on living the G4M3RL143 and all around being proud of who you are, no matter what people say about you. Given the recent turmoil in the news over a bully film that used the f bomb, the issue of bullying has still yet to really become a mainstream effort or been dealt with as swiftly as it should. Of all the bands I didn’t expect to be (successfully) parodied, you could probably put LMFAO at the top of that list. Part of that might just be because they sort of parody themselves already, and it’s pretty much impossible to take anything they do seriously in the least. But then comes along Eric Schwartz (aka Smooth E), comedian and host of the nationally syndicated show On the Spot — who’s managed to tribute “Party Rock Anthem” with an orgy of green screens, bad wigs, and some pretty bad ass beat street moves with it all. Richie Branson continues to drop Mobile Suit Gundam nerdcore tributes like Tyler Perry making Madea movies.

In this one, simply entitled ‘Merquise Dreams’ off the Wing Zero EP, it’s not just the subject material that Branson’s managed to capture – complete with what some people might consider to be somewhat esoteric MSG references — it’s the spirit of that need to escape via daydream, especially in the hellish boredom of school. Suffice it to say, Tron fans who had waited nearly 30 years for the highly-anticipated sequel to arguably one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time — aka Tron:Legacy — gave their fair share of mixed reviews.

Okay, most people hated it except for Michael Sheen. Those of you who did, fear not (after all, they’re making another one that will surely make up for it) — so don’t throw yourself off the grid yet; we have something that might make up for it.

Or at least, help de-rez some of those unpleasant memories (HA). Courtesy of Keep Reading
