If you’ve ever been overwhelmed with all of the different incoming alerts and sounds coming from your growing collection of electronic devices, you’ll appreciate this song from Chris Crutchfield inspired by those very sounds.

The result is a song made up almost entirely of the sounds of mouse clicks, key presses, and notification beeps and boops from the devices we use most. Not only is the song impressive, but the video (below) shot on a RED camera is worth a watch too.

Chris explained the inspiration for the project: Keep Reading

Is This the Future of Music? Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Symphony

Monday, 30th January 2012
Posted in Blog Archive, Music, Pop Culture
Tags: Eric Whitacre, sleep, symphony, TED, Virtual Choir, youtube

In a recent article on BigThink, author Ayesha Khanna addresses problems in the world of learning music that seem all too legitimate: how do students/aspiring musical prodigies practice their instrument in a world increasingly on the go, where kids pack up and move along with their parents when they have to relocate?

What about finding a band to jam with, especially if you live in a remote town in the middle of nowhere? These are just two of the several problems that could be solved with the advent of Kinect and Julliard graduate Eric Whitacre’s ‘Virtual Choir’ concept.

The difficulties of a) keeping the same music teacher and regularly practicing Keep Reading

Fans of the above should know that the single for D’s The Best Damn F*ckin’ Rappers in the Universe dropped today. Was Megaupload Shutdown Over Upcoming iTunes-Killer Music Service?

Tuesday, 24th January 2012

When we brought you the story of potentially shady file sharing community MegaUpload being shutdown by the feds, accusations the site lead to over $500 million in lost revenue from pirated content was enough to land the execs on trial for various piracy related charges, racketeering, and money laundering.

While the company’s plans to launch a new music service known as “MegaBox” in 2012 are more than likely on hold, some are claiming it, and not piracy, lead to the ultimate demise of the site under the watch of Universal Music Group. Keep Reading

Tired of Taking Sh*t, Nickelback Fires Off Vengeful Tweets

Tuesday, 24th January 2012

Tags: Detroit Lions, haters, NIckelback, tweet, Twitter, worst band ever

Who is the most hated band in the world? It sounds like quite a general topic, one that could set off a sprawling debate lasting for weeks. But judging by the petition signed by 55,000 haters to stop Nickelback from playing a Detroit Lions halftime show last year, the Canadian quartet is probably one of them.

Nickelback might not have done themselves any favors when, according to The Hollywood Reporter, they decided to strike back against a series of vicious anti-Nickelback tweets. Keep Reading

“Star Wars: A New Hope,” Remade in15-Second Clips by Hundreds of Geek Fans

Tuesday, 24th January 2012

Dedicated Star Wars fan Casey Pugh took it upon himself to re-make all of Episode IV: A New Hope back in 2009 — an epic undertaking if there ever was one. What exactly possessed him to do so, we may never know — but instead of trying to compete with the likes of Lucasfilm and ILM, Pugh had a different idea — assemble an entire 2 hours’ worth of 15 second clips, all sweded (“The summarized recreation of popular pop-culture films using limited budgets and a camcorder”) versions of the 1977 classic submitted by fans.

The result is a faithful and gleefully no-budget re-envisioning, and it doesn’t sound like it was easy Keep Reading

Watch Jackie Chan Battle Pixels on Acid in “Land of the Nod”, One of Two Awesome Videos by IS TROPICAL

Monday, 23rd January 2012

With a band moniker like IS TROPICAL, perhaps it’s only fitting that the quirky English synth pop band inspired a couple of loyal fans named Pablo and Josh to make an equally strange video for the single, ‘Land of The Nod.’

Somewhere between a digital painting slathered on your screen, and a youtube video suffering from what feels like standard Firefox stutter (on acid), ‘LOTN’ is as infectious as the erratic and quirky melody of Is Tropical’s beat.

Jackie Chan’s acrobatic stunts are swallowed and spit out by a congestion of thick pixellated paint, and it’s as smooth as water cascading through a river of oil.  Keep Reading

L33t Gamer Pwns Mega Man 2 Live, While Full Band Plays Along

As a kid I always used to marvel at friends who could perform ‘speed runs’ on Genesis and Super NES — those guys who could get through a copy of Mega Man or Super Mario or Zelda in a couple hours or few minutes with no fatalities — just because they knew all the tricks, warp zones and secret passageways from having played the game for years, and could now get it all done in a few minutes.

While at first I didn’t get the appeal of wanting to win the game twice, it soon registered that -duh!- the idea was to show off your skillz to all the ladies and thereby increase your influx of passed notes/playground pecks on the cheek Keep Reading

To Live and Die (for Art) in L.A.: An Interview With Beatrice Brigitte

Posted in Blog Archive, Music
Tags: artist, Beatrice Brigitte, interview, L.A., model, Music, musician

Talk to any aspiring somebody living in the City of Angels, hoping to achieve the dream of being able to live solely off their art, and you’ll hear stories of struggle. Possibly even drugs, prostitution, and being spit out the bottom of the porn industry. It’s a wonder the Hollywood sign doesn’t have a bigger one underneath it that reads “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.”

For seemingly every thousand stories of “hey, I didn’t make it” comes a story of success. So where does Beatrice Brigitte fit in all of this? She’s a musician, avid gamer, geek, and someone who seems to believe unfailingly in the importance of art in and of itself. And as her profile suggests — and as a lot of wiser, older people would tell you — it’s largely about how you look at yourself, not how others look at you, that defines success for you as an artist. Lady Gaga Looks Like a Man, While Del Ray Looks Lovely in Tribute to “Video Games”

Friday, 13th January 2012
Posted in Blog Archive, Music, Pop Culture
Tags: DJ Magic Baron, Lady Gaga, Lane Del Rey, mashup

DJ Magic Baron’s made a serious skill out of mashing up classic top 40 dance/electronica hits with various other talented acts. Fresh off his mutant molding of with LMFAO, the Baron has teamed up with singer Lana Del Rey for a cybernetic hybrid of Lady Gaga’s genre-bending country song, “You and I.” Instead of celebrating love unrequited to an androgynous alter-ego, however, Del Rey and Baron have created — what else? — “You and I Video Games”, a ballad for all things console-related.

Del Rey’s made a name for herself with her own unique styles of singing, which sometimes include country, alt rock, R&B, and pretty much whatever she wants. And with the help of videographer VJ Remedy, Baron and Del Rey (and Gaga) have created a clever little tribute. Not much else to it, as this video will attest, but we thought you’d enjoy it anyways. See what you think. Keep Reading

One of the fastest-growing talent/booking agencies in the world, AM Only, officially combined today with one of the other fastest growing — Paradigm — making for what many would call an unusual merger in the realm of corporate rock.

Paradigm is revered in the industry as home to rock and AOR stalwarts like Phish, Black Eyed Peas, Coldplay, Toby Keith, Dave Matthews Band, Aerosmith, and others. Booking/Talent Agency AM Only, meanwhile, houses David Guetta, Tiesto, Skrillex, and several more rising dance and DJ prodigies.

So — who gives a sh*t, you might ask, about yet another messy corporate merger in the world of corporate music? Keep Reading

Youtuber AndywithanM concocted a witty little video worshiping at the altar of all things Hunger Games — and after a couple days, damn if ain’t whipping up a fair amount of hits. Even if you hate Bruno Mars‘ “Grenade” and/or the HG books there’s worse things to look at than a cute blonde chick running around the forest and lamenting the omniscient presence of a Big Brother kind of govt. while dressing herself in raggedy outfits in front of a green screen (and damn if that doesn’t look like a decent 30% cleavage or so).

She also manages to do so without taking herself seriously, most succinctly in the lyrics, like this chorus: Keep Reading

EPIC Mortal Kombat Flash Dance, Round 2

MKFDAll right, so this is the second video we’ve featured with nutty dancers in Mortal Kombat outfits trapesing around New York City like morons. But as opposed to the n00bs (saibot!) of video # 1, GeeksAreSexy featured video of this kombat krew, who went back to Beat Street for some refresher lessons. Witness, for instance, Scorpion’s bad-ass caterpillar, dancing of a much ballsier variety (i.e. up in everyone’s face, from restaurant patrons to sidewalk Santas), and the fact that there’s a girl who braved New York’s Winter to dress like Mileena (?), even down to the nifty booty shorts.

They even jump on/off a moving port-a-potty truck, gyrate up against an unsuspecting Spongebob and comatose Cookie Monster, and even demonstrate what might be some actual karate moves Keep Reading

Courtesy of The Fringe, this video shows off MrSolidSnake745 using some amazing editing skills, with Keep Reading

Spike Jonze Captures Yo-Yo Ma and Lil Buck’s B-Boy Duet

If you’re like a lot of people, you’re probably familiar with Yo Yo Ma. You know he’s awesome, but still have absolutely no desire to see him in concert as it’d be hard to stay awake.

Fortunately, there’s Spike Jonze, the director who brought you Where The Wild Things Are and the music video with that guy on fire. And of course the video also features Buck, who’s hard to dig up info on but is listed as a “classically trained street dancer” who’s currently enjoying a residence at the Vail Int’l Film Festival.

According to The Boston globe, Jonze had this to say about the event: Keep Reading

Drake Vs. Common, Common Vs. Drake: Does It Ever End?

Wednesday, 21st December 2011

Tags: Common, diss, drake, hip hop, MC, rap, So Far Gone

For those of you who missed it, Common was a guest on DJ Sway’s Sirius XM morning show yesterday on Shade 45 (http://www.siriusxm.com/shade45), and made a few points about a recurring theme in hip hop these days: MCs duking it out, exchanging disses, taunts and threats, and perhaps all in sacrifice of what some might see as the bigger picture — the music and lyrics.

After taking a few seconds to listen to “Sweet,” a new single from his new album The Dreamer/The Believer,Common even told Sway and his audience that he himself was fair game. “Any artist can be a target, especially when you get in and start saying ‘they’re dope’…for me, there’s some cats that are gonna come at me, but I’m a warrior so let’s go. That’s just what it is.” Keep Reading

If by chance you’re in the neighborhood of Meridian, Idaho you’re probably very familiar with the Cadger Family’s Christmas Light display.

With over 35,000 LED lights and 64 Light O Rama channels (Light O Rama being the leading manufacturer and retailer of systems used to create animated shows involving lights, music and motion, of course), the family decided to spice things up this year with a dubstep re-mix of the Nutcracker. Freddie Gibbs Avoids Massive #Fail, Gets Busted for Pot (Sort Of)

Saturday, 17th December 2011
Posted in Blog Archive, Music, Offbeat, Pop Culture
Tags: C'mon Son, drugs, fail, Freddie Gibbs, pot, tsa

Freddie Gibbs makes a lot of things look easy — could breaking the law be one of them? After finding two bags of weed in the rapper’s bags, TSA officials apparently let him off with a warning, via handwritten note that simply read “C’mon Son.”

Rumors abound as to whether the ‘note’ was an authentic warning, or just part of a quickly thought-up hoax by Gibbs, designed to get him some attention.

If anything’s for certain, it’s that the ‘Cmon Son’ note bears an uncanny resemblance to the note left behind by another TSA agent, who wrote “Get Your Freak On Girl” upon finding a passenger’s vibrator during a routine bag search. Said TSA-er was promptly fired; could it be said these guys have learned nothing since that debacle? Will this agent end up enduring a similar fate? Or did the vibrator incident inspire Gibbs to pull off his own stunt? Keep Reading
