UFO Phil: Dangerous, Insane, Maybe Both

Posted in NERDCORE, Pop Culture
Tags: Limestone Pyramid, nerd, nerdcore, Pikes Peak, UFO Phil

UFO Phil is widely hailed as one of the most venerable and yet respected performers of the Nerdcore genre.  There are a couple of reasons for this : a) he plays every single instrument on every album, getting him much love on a purely aesthetic level and b) he goes WAY back, even to the Dr. Demento days — and the good doctor, as we told ya a couple days ago, is kind of like the Roger Corman of Nerdcore: like Professor X, he gave a whole bunch of nerds with random special powers a means in which to harness them. Demento did, after all, give us Weird Al.

UFO Phil has his fingers in many pies, and still makes regular appearances on The Tom Green show, and nerdcore fare like The People vs. George Lucas. Right now he’s made it his mission to build a pyramid on top of Pike’s Peak. How the hell exactly he will accomplish this is beyond Keep Reading

MUSIC – MC Hawking Disappeared into the Wormhole

Since a recurring theme this week seems to be long-absent Nerdcore artists, I’d like to shine a beacon for another one I haven’t heard anything from in way too long a time.

Here’s a guy who actually went to the trouble of writing and producing an ‘alternate discography’, sort of the equivalent of an alternate reality on shows like Fringe and movies like Back to the Future II. But since MC Hawking‘s last album — a greatest hits collection of his songs, which have primarily been released through his website as MP3s — little has been heard from the man (and his back-up man DJ Doomsday) since 2004.

MUSIC – Optimus Rhyme: Bring Back the Matrix of Nerdcore Leadership

Posted in Gaming, NERDCORE, Pop Culture
Tags: 2008, Autobot Airbus, Optimus Rhyme, Penny Arcade Expo, TransfORmed

Consider this a quick letter to the boys of Optimus Rhyme. Of all the Nerdcore bands which seem to have been on an extended hiatus as of late, Optimus Rhyme might be the one people miss most. All right, it might be just my friends and I, who spent our youths worshiping at the altar of Transformers.

Accidentally stumbling upon the movie the other night (the real movie, not that 2007 piece of crap by Bay) I was reminded about the greatness of all things Autobot, Decepticon, Cybertronian, and why the whole TF Universe is plain genius, and man — I miss that one band that used to talk about this sh*t all the time. Yeah, some of their stuff was better than others, but their tendency to mix in a little of the ska/reggae thing helped lend it a little bit more of a novelty. They’re actually pretty damn talented and this video for “Autobeat Airbus”, taken from the 2006 Penny Arcade Expo, proves it. This is proof of their greatness Keep Reading

MUSIC – Jesse Dangerously: No Longer Nerdcore?

Tuesday, 21st June 2011
Posted in Blog Archive, NERDCORE, Pop Culture
Tags: JESSE DANGEROUSLY, mc chris, nerdcore, nerdcore music

It was only last year that MC Lars proclaimed that “Nerdcore is Dead,” causing perhaps a bit wee too much panic amongst aficionados and stalwart fans of the genre –  which had its perhaps most formidable argument to such a notion in the form of Jesse Dangerously. For a while it was hard not to compare it to the whole ‘punk is dead’ credo, which also seemed a bit premature at the time (depending on your own take).

Dangerously’s latest album, Humble and Brilliant, Keep Reading

MUSIC – Penny Arcade: The Anti-Hip Hop-er’s Answer to Nerdcore

If 2 Skinny J’s were the first Nerdcore band, and MC Frontalot actually coined the genre, then Penny Arcade helped bring it all to the world of webcomics. The weekly exploits of two completely different personalities – Tycho Brahe and John Gabriel, the alter egos of real-life creators Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkinsalter, respectively — has going strong for nearly 15 years, and is considered Keep Reading

MUSIC – MC Chris Might Be the Busiest Man in Hip-Hop: Here’s 3 Reasons Why

MC Chris dropped his children’s album, Marshmellow Playground earlier this year, around March 4 — and a mere half-year later, he’s ready to release his follow-up, the (nearly) all-instrumental Race Wars. Chris is one of the most prolific artists/songwriters out there, as well as one of the most beloved, and we’ve got a few theories on what makes him Keep Reading

MUSIC – Happy 20th, 2 Skinny J’s! Are You Breaking Up for Real This Time?

C’mon! They dress like Mork from Ork, what else do you want…

2011 marks the official 20th anniversary of 2 Skinny J’s, the oldest Nerdcore band in the world — yeah, Frontalot may have coined the term, but 2 skinny J’s was officially the first — and the band intends to celebrate. The bad news is that, predictably, the band broke up yet again.

Uh, possibly.

Yes, we know that only a mere 10 or so months ago, the band tweeted “2011 is 2SJ’s 20th anniversary! We’ve got a plan but want to hear from you! What should we do to celebrate with you Champions? Let us know!”

Yet almost a year later, this very tweet seems nothing more than a brutal tease — especially since the band’s last official post is from December…hmmm. Could it be they’re Keep Reading

MUSIC – YTCracker and Peter Shor: Living By a Different Code

Monday, 20th June 2011
Posted in Blog Archive, NERDCORE
Tags: nerdcore, NERDCORE, peter shor, ytcracker

When was the last time you heard about a successful artist still wanting to keep his old day job? More appropriately, when you’re making some real cash as a musician, isn’t it just a given that you’ll spend your free hours doing lines in your velvet bathrobe while surrounded by skimpy throngs (and thongs) of bubbly co-eds?

Not so for YTCracker, who makes it his mission to celebrate, revel, and (intuitively) pay tribute to the world of nerd-dom, albeit not in a strictly NES/WOW/LOTR way. Sort of like how some 90s hip-hoppers could leave the ghetto when the ghetto couldn’t leave them (even MC Hammer went to jail as a teenager for shooting a liquor store owner), the hacker never left YT. And when suburban honkies like me were struggling over our ABC’s, the guy began learning computer programming languages when he was 4, sitting on his daddy’s lap in front of an Apple II and getting lectured on BASIC. No wonder he pays tribute to famed MIT genius Peter Shor this week.

And like a lot of computer programmer savants/prodigies/geniuses, Cracker (aka Bryce Case) eventually dropped out of high school to focus on computer programming. So while so many other musicians are spending their time in the aforementioned throes of debauchery or tweeting while high (“oi vey don’t f**k with my wradrobe or you willend up in a circle of corched eaeth hunted till your dead” — Courtney Love) this week YTCracker has praised the accolades and accomplishments of Peter Shor. If you ain’t never heard, Shor is Professor of Applied Mathematics at MIT, and most famous for developing an algorithm — one which a) computes integers uber-fast on quantum computers and thus b) basically enabled YT to hack into NASA’s Godard Space Center website in 1999, amongst others, earning him a nice visit from the NSA.

And that’s all. Most of the stuff is beyond me, especially since I dropped out of Pre-Cal in college. But it gives even the math-illiterate a little more depth behind a musician in the burgeoning Nerdcore scene, and a brief glimpse inside the brain of one of the world’s most brilliant mathematicians. Check this out for a sort of dumbed-down explanation of how the algorithm pertains to hacking security clearance.

Rebecca Black Pulls “Friday” from Youtube

Friday, 17th June 2011
Posted in Blog Archive, NERDCORE, Pop Culture
Tags: darth vader friday, friday, friday music video, rebecca black

By R. Bryant Francis

Fans of overnight hit Rebecca Black may be disappointed today to see that her hit single “Friday” has been yanked by Youtube on a copyright claim from Rebecca Black herself. This is the latest in a strange youtube history associated with the song, which vanished a couple months ago, recently was made to be a rental for $2.99 (more expensive than buying it on iTunes), and now appears to be gone for good.

It’s unclear why the video’s been yanked—Black made no previous objections to having the song on Youtube, though an interview she gave with The Daily Beast back in March showed she didn’t exactly think the song was a piece of genius herself.

While many music critics might be happy that the song’s gone, we at the Jace Hall show aren’t so relieved. Black caught a lot of flack for trying to get some actual experience in the field she wanted to be in, while the terrible lyrics, heavy auto-tune, and strangely mediocre music video with weirdly high production values were all courtesy of the label Ark Music Factory. (Who do deserve plenty of flak for profiting off the success of the internet mocking a 13 year old girl.)

Black even turned the song into some good—the Daily Beast article reports she was turning some of her profits into charity, something we can’t say we’ve seen other pop-culture figures do.

She also mentioned in the interview that the comments against her sometimes amounted to cyber-bullying, except this time the entire internet was in on it. We’ve talked about bullying here at the Jace Hall Show, and it remains not cool.

So if the video does come back up—or another Rebecca Black surfaces somewhere (Ark Music Factory’s got at least three waiting in the wings)–think hard before you write that Youtube comment.

There’s still always this:

“Kreayshawn” – The Next Big Thing in Hip-Hop?

Written By Paul Nyhart

She’s not Amy Wiinehouse, she’s not Nicki Minaj. She’s Kreayshawn, the Californian 21-year old rapper being dubbed the next big thing in hip-hop.

Just try and get the refrain out of your head: “One big room, full of bad bitches.”

Certainly topical considering the state of modern hip-hop…

She’s already being hit up by some of the biggest cats in the biz, receiving a DM from Drake on Twitter:

He reached out to tell me, like, “You’re gonna be crying while sipping rosé on a tour bus.” I’m kinda scared now.

Her video is nearing 2 million hits in roughly 2 weeks, puutting her on the fast-track towards stardom. But what makes Kreayshawn different from those she resembles at first glance? There’s her striking sartorial, and crazy swag, for one: Keep Reading

Eduardo Fresco Set to Take Over The Music World; Jace Hall Recalls Their Earlier Days

Eduardo Fresco Jace Hall

It was a crisp, warm Chilean afternoon, way back in 2009, when I awoke at the La Viva Tropicana Dance club. It was the same nightclub I had rocked the night before, with the help of a young, up and coming South American singer, named Eduardo Fresco. We had just knocked the socks off the club Yelp had rated as the most popular in Santiago, Chile, playing until the sun came up and the DJ went down (from exhaustion).

We were smothered in nothing but expensive beverages and Spring Break groupies, living the kind of life musicians like Enrique Iglesias, Akon or Sting could only imagine in their sleep. But little did we know, this was just the beginning for both of us.

Prior to that night, we had never shared the same stage, but you’d never had known it. Eduardo showed me his (soon-to-be) patented corner girl dance, while I taught him my charming, “get-over-here” gleam, gazing it into every girl that we decidedly made our move on.

It was like Peanut butter and Jelly, we became the hottest thing to hit the South American nightclub/dance party/karaoke scene since bass
speakers. It was only a matter of time before things went big.

And that’s exactly what happened. Eduardo Fresco struck oil with the music video that changed everything about the way people sing and dance in clubs (or at low-end establishments pretending to be clubs)

“The Way I Fiesta…”

With the dropping of his epic music video, global audiences knew what club owners, spring breakers, and Carnivale clean-up crews had discovered long ago, “How Eduardo Fresco Fiestas.” Keep Reading

video game music

What’s the only thing that’s more unforgettable than our favorite video games? The songs that played in them.

I found this out the hard way when my parents used to send me to my room…I had the rocks to play video games, anyway, but wasn’t going to blow my cover and play them with the sound on (it just wasn’t the same…)

Video games without their title tracks is like cereal without milk…a television without a remote…a fancy car with no radio (I’ll stop now). Music sets the tone for the gameplay, drives us right into the action, and as the list below points out, it’s ultimately one of the main things we remember about our particular video game experiences.

These are my top, most unforgettable songs and scores from video games. Keep Reading

Here’s a question: would you miss hearing the likes of Jeremih or Katy Perry if they were no longer on the radio? If you answered yes, you are either a) a fifteen year old girl or B) someone who wears sunglasses indoors. If you emphatically answered no, you’re probably one of the millions of silent Americans who don’t really know where to turn when it comes to finding music that actually has a message and speaks to matters close to them (did you kiss a girl and did you like it?)

Pop Musicians are a dime a dozen and for the most part are cranking out hits like factories crank out car parts or fast food chains crank out burgers. Wouldn’t it be nice to give ourselves some variety, Keep Reading
