She’s not Amy Wiinehouse, she’s not Nicki Minaj. She’s Kreayshawn, the Californian 21-year old rapper being dubbed the next big thing in hip-hop.
Just try and get the refrain out of your head: “One big room, full of bad bitches.”
Certainly topical considering the state of modern hip-hop…
She’s already being hit up by some of the biggest cats in the biz, receiving a DM from Drake on Twitter:
He reached out to tell me, like, “You’re gonna be crying while sipping rosé on a tour bus.” I’m kinda scared now.
Her video is nearing 2 million hits in roughly 2 weeks, puutting her on the fast-track towards stardom. But what makes Kreayshawn different from those she resembles at first glance? There’s her striking sartorial, and crazy swag, for one:
When I go out to a party I make a point to wear crazy little tube tops and oversize jackets with baggy jeans. Right now, I’m at the studio wearing Jordans and a leather jacket—just fresh, you feel me? I usually have to thrift shop at Goodwill, which is why I have crazy swag.
Perhaps the biggest advanatage Kreayshawn has is that the foundation of women in hip-hop is being set in place, by the likes of Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha (Ke$ha is working on it). That and her bold lyrics and an attitude we rarely see from female artists.
Bitch, you ain’t no Barbie, I see you work at Arby’s / Number two, super size, hurry up, I’m starving…Don’t be mad, UPS is hiring”; “I got the swag, and it’s pumping out my ovaries!
And that’s just the edited version…
With the internet proving itself as the proverbial stage for those auditioning as the next big thing, either on purpose (Kreayshawn) or by accident (Rebecca Black) there’s no telling how music will evolve. One thing’s for sure, the internet is an open channel to say basically whatever you want, and musicians are taking advantage of the fact their content isn’t going to be bleeped out on the radio. Kreayshawn seems to be the most prominent female rapper to do that with a unique style that sets her apart from any other female artist (ask Drake). Time will only tell, whether that only earns her 15 minutes of Youtube fame, or makes her the next big thing in hip-hop.
