As most of you’ve heard, Amy Winehouse passed away on Saturday. A lot of the hip-hop community were quick to send their condolences and regards. Big Boi was the first to point out that Amy was yet another in a long list of stars to die at the tender young age of 27 (others have included Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, original Stones drummer Brian Jones, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobain). “All died age 27,” said Big Boi. “RIP you all.” Nicki Minaj added, “Please tell me Amy Winehouse didn’t die. Is this some sick joke?” Nas tweeted, “RIP Sis. Why u couldn’t chill? Why the F*ck U Leave? Love U Sis!” A tweet from @Beyonce_Knowle read, “Anyone who is considering drugs as party as part of their Saturday night tonight, I hope this makes you reconsider #RIPAMY.
A few of them obviously didn’t bother to exclude their anti-drug messages as well. Wasn’t super familiar with Winehouse’s work, but you’d have to be deaf to not think she had a stellar, souldful-as-f*ck set of pipes. Is it appropriate or does it really matter? We all know what Amy Winehouse’s vices were; does her family (or us) need a lecture right now? What do you guys think?
