At the recent Tokyo Game Conference, the creative team behind Ninja Gaiden 3 seemed anxious to unveil the intriguing possibilities of the latest in the venerable game franchise. Specifically that it will be a cross between Ninja Gaiden and Highlander.
It’s the closest reference we could come up with, if only because Ryu spends half the time listening to a lecture on how he’s really just an egomanical a-hole. “How many lives has that arm taken?” asks the mysterious cloaked figure (aka Ramirez). “Hundreds? Thousands?” Then we watch Ryu’s arm begins to pulsate and grow, because “the blood of those you’ve cut down infused your sword together with their vengeful hatred!…now it’s in your arm!”
In a ‘quickening’-like flash of light and blood, Ryu drops to his knees, overcome by the might of his new giant arm which he’s received from the collected powers of all his enemies.
So, okay, sort of like Highlander.I guess in that sense it’s a bit like Mega Manas well. But even if you’re confused/unimpressed by the storyline (or lack thereof), rejoice in this news: Online engineer Ueda (yes all of Ninja Gaiden’s producers have just one name) also elaborated on the competitive multiplayer mode that will be featured in the game. It’ll let you connect with other ninja players in an online tournament, with the goal of achieving and surpassing hero Ryu Hayabusa’s ninja status.
Additionally, you will be able to choose from ‘ninja’ mode — which entails all the traditional elements of the franchise’s gameplay – or ‘hero’ mode, whichenable an automatic dodge/parry kind of effect, allowing you to enjoy said confusing/weird/Highlander-like gameplay.
