Animator Freddie Wong has provided gaming lovers with tons of unusual tributes. Gems as diverse as “Skyrim Badass” and “Battlefield Bingo” litter his YouTube page, just a couple of clever send-offs to the most popular games out there.
The behind-the-scenes story is pretty rad too. Here his longtime animating cohort Brandon Laatsch reveals just how big of a pain in the ass making “Endgame” was (as well as dispels some rumors concerning how long it took to make). Freddie Wong hits the nail on the head — if only we could all go back in time and warn the 10 year old in all of us that Sega Genesis, Goldeneye, and Syphon Filter would be the zenith of the gaming world.
But that’s exactly what Freddie does in his latest video, An Inconvenient Truth, which shows just how far video games have fallen (don’t even bring up Star Wars). Anybody who remembers Sonic and/or had to take piano lessons will appreciate this. For those of you who have no idea what any of the above means, and think iPods have been around as long as the dawn of time…I feel sorry for you. Watch the video and see just want might have been.

Freddie Wong has over 3.5 million subscribers and half a billion video views (across two channels) on YouTube, making him one of the most respected and unique filmmakers on the video channel. Two, maybe three years ago, being a respected filmmaker on YouTube meant that you could figure out how to work a webcam, but today, Youtube has grown into a paradise for both young and experienced filmmakers to experiment, develop, and now PROFIT off their craft, with the added benefit of interacting with their fanbase like never before. Brian Barrett over at Gizmodo wrote a post talking about the nature of “free” content on the internet, and how we should get used to the notion of subscribing and paying for things like the New York Times, TV Shows, and other things we’re used to getting for either free or with the basic cover charge that is internet access. I recommend you read it, mainly for his argument that the internet as we knew it Continue reading “Sorry Gizmodo, The Internet Did Not Lie to Us” »
