“Don’t mind us…we’re just spying on you from your toaster, continue buttering your morning toast and pretend like we’re not even here.”

It might sound ridiculous, and also delicious, but the government could soon be using your appliances to spy on you.

This all according to a Networked World story that the U.S. Government is licking its chops at the forthcoming “smart home” where devices are tethered to our mobile devices: Continue reading “The Government Wants To Spy On You…Using Your Home Appliances?” »

With playable demos already heating up Xbox Live and PSN, a few pre-release copies of Mass Effect 3, set for release on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on March 6, have been launched into space. These copies will be landing in the hands of a few lucky recipients who will get to play the game before it officially hits stores.

USAToday reports publisher EA has launched copies attached to weather balloons over San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York, Paris, and London. You won’t have to aimlessly go looking for a copy that might land near you, as EA will allow you to track the game’s onboard GPS tracker on masseffect.com. Of course, it will be first come first service when the copies ultimately land safely back on terra firma. ghetto appA new feature being developed by Microsoft is stirring up a bit of controversy, not necessarily for its ability to help you avoid dangerous parts of town, but mainly for its nickname — “Avoid Ghetto”.

According to NPR, the technology is actually part of Microsoft’s “Pedestrian Route Production” patent, which would allow a user to receive the safest route possible to any given desitination based on violent crime statistics.

The idea sounds harmless enough — to help citizens, specifically those travelling by foot, to avoid dangerous areas. However Continue reading “Microsoft Working On “Avoid Ghetto” Feature– Is It Racist?” »

According to the Richmond Register, several Richmond, Kentucky-area criminal investigations are on suspension, following a decision by the Supreme Court that GPS tracking of suspected criminals is illegal without a court-issued warrant.

The decision follows numerous cases in which Kentucky Drug Task Force officers attached GPS devices to the cars of several known/suspected drug dealers without court authorization. The deciding case, Antoine Jones vs. The United States, came before the Court as a result of continued and unwarranted tracking of Jones, a suspected cocaine trafficker. A new app called Tactical Nav developed by U.S. Army captain Jonathan Springer was designed specifically to help soldiers in combat. Bloomberg interviewed Springer at his base at Fort Bragg in North Carolina:

“I wanted to give something back to soldiers that might help save their lives”

Taking advantage of the iPhone’s camera and built-in GPS, Tactical Nav has been downloaded by approximately 8,000 troops and hunters across the U.S., Canada, and Australia. The app allows users to plot navigational waypoints on a map using the military grid reference system (MGRS) used by NATO Armed Forces and U.S. Military.
