Sony has already began seeking out personnel for its big budget film adaption of the “Uncharted” video game franchise. According to Variety (via GT) the film has tapped two new writers for the film as well as parting ways with the latest director, Neil Burger.
Burger of ‘Limitless’ fame is no longer attached to the film project. At this point there is no word as to why exactly he wont be at the helm.
Now with new scribes rewriting the story a new director will be brought on once the new script is finished.
Marianne and Cormac Wibberley have been tapped to pen the story of the upcoming Uncharted film. Continue reading “Daily Gaming: Uncharted Movie Loses Director, Adds National Treasure Writers” »

I can’t think of a better duo of reviewers/hosts to delve into the problems with Prometheus than Red Letter Media, a couple of semi-comatose possibly serial-killing movie goers who may or may not work at Target, to analyze the movie — and do it so well and entertainingly. Lots of the usual questions pop up, and ones I tried my best to ignore, to no avail.
The most obvious ones first:
-Why would the characters respond to potentially hostile and creepy looking alien life by wanting to reach out and PET it?
-While we’re at it, how could such ‘bright’ scientists be so f*cking dumb? Continue reading “The Rant: Let’s Talk About PROMETHEUS, Baby (SPOILERS)” »

From the people who brought you Finding Nemo, The Lion King and who can forget, John Carter comes “Wreck It Ralph” a new animatated comedy from Disney.
Why the hell are we covering a new disney movie, you ask? Well only because the film looks excellent and it’s one in a line of, well, zero other films that discuss the perils of being a video game bad guy (in cartoon form at least).
John C. Reilly lends his voice to the character of Ralph, who apparently, like Zangchief and red Pacman, have grown tired of wrecking things for the video game Continue reading ““Wreck It Ralph” Asks, What If Bad Video Game Characters Became Good Guys?” »

Although cries of protest and anger proved enough to quell the threat of Stop Online Piracy Act, it seems that its evil twin PIPA (or Stop Online Piracy Act) is causing just as much of a firestorm of controversy.
While it’s a bit too soon to tell if this particular piece of legislation will get shelved in similar fashion, it could stand to reason that if and several other sites follow suit, the government might have something to think about. So yeah, take that oppressive Orwellian-esque legislation! Will it take 700,000 tweets and over a million emails do the trick and end it all, much the way it did with SOPA? And as the San Diego City Beat newspaper insists, it will ‘compromise the planet’s digital security and open the doors for China-class censorship.’ Continue reading “Will the SOPA/PIPA Boycotts Do Any Good?” »

In medicine, a mass effect is what happens when something is growing in your body. In the gaming world, it is an acclaimed game franchise, embraced by critics and an enthusiastic community. And – on a side note – has been the target of some of the most ridiculous accusations that have ever been issued against a video game.
So it was only a matter of time for Hollywood to step in with their cinematic version of the game, still rumored to be in development. For those of you with more confidence in the online movie world; you’ll be able to watch Mass Effect: Assignment this month!
British YouTubers Gary Scullion and Nick Acott aka SneakyZebra are currently performing the finishing touches on their fan film Mass Effect: Assignment to be released this January.

The viral video hit from a couple years ago by Patrick Jean, PIXELS, is getting turned into a full-length movie for release in May 17th, 2013.
The video details the invasion of a (New York?) city by an army of steadily multiplying pixels that basically destroy everything they come into contact with — 80s arcade staples like Space Invaders, Tetris Blocks, and Donkey Kong being the main culprits. Along with the release of iOS 5 and the public launch of iCloud earlier today, Apple also released a number of new apps and updates to some of their core iOS apps.
First up is the new Find My Friends app. While it doesn’t have many features as of yet, this one has the most potential to be something bigger down the road. As you can probably figure out from the name, the app allows you to find your friends on a map by sending them a request to see their location. This might be interesting in the future if Apple decides to implement it into other features of iOS and possibly add other social networking type features. You can grab the app for free now Continue reading “Apple releases Find My Friends, Cards, Airport Utility, and iTunes Movie Trailer apps” »

So remember when we said Mass Effect would be at Comic-Con? And we said the movie’s writers would be there? And we said they’d have a panel with Legendary films, the company producing the movies?
We apologize. While there was indeed a panel at Comic-Con, and Casey Hudson and Mark Protosevicthane did show up. There was no actual news about the movie. Nope, none. Nada. No casting information, no director’s choices–nothing. I’d have settled to hear about the Producers they’d hired, for crying out loud.

Phewph! So to all our Uncharted fans up there, be glad: New director Neil Burger has publicly stated he’s tossing out David. O Russell’s “family of treasure hunters” script without even having read it. (Usually a bad sign for the quality of the script), and is going back to the game itself to get the story for his version of the story of treasure-hunter Nathan Drake.

Due to the unprecedented success of Avatar, James Cameron – in case none of you had heard – is already hard at work on the two sequels. Thus, his adaption of Battle Angel Alita is on hold until further notice. And by ‘until further notice’ we mean until 2016/2017. That means half a friggin decade at least, arrrggh.
In a recent interview Cameron insisted that “I’m doing a second and third (Avatar). We’re at the writing stage right now, early design, doing software development and so on. Battle Angel is right now on hold until those films are done.”
It’s disappointing a bit, if only because a) Alita is an amazing manga/anime and it would return Cameron to the world of cyborgs that he helped pioneer, and b) he’d hinted that he would work on Alita and probably make it before the 2nd or 3rd sequel came out.
On a personal note, I don’t know why but I just could not get into Avatar. I could give a laundry list of reasons why, but suffice it to say I would almost rather sit through Titanic instead. Part of the frustration was knowing he had already been working on Alita, doing designs storyboards, etc., and then Avatar took over. On the other hand, Cameron has insisted he’s still doing it. At least we have Ridley Scott’s return to sci-fi in the meantime with Prometheus.

Okay, before you start flaming us, yeah, there are some pretty legit voice actors out there. Jennifer Hale, (Femshep from Mass Effect) Frank Welker, (Megatron, Soundwave, everyone else) Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime, Eeyore), and Phil LaMarr (Samurai Jack) all rock just about everything you’ve ever watched. But this news is another sign that the walls between video games and mainstream entertainment are breaking down even further.
Activision, publisher of the upcoming X-Men: Destiny, and Spider-Man: Edge of Time announced today it’s bringing some heavy hitting voice talent to the table, meaning you’ll be hearing some familiar voices when you boot up these games this fall. Val Kilmer, (formerly Batman) will be voicing the villain in the Spider-Man game, and Katee Sackhoff, (Formerly Starbuck from BSG) will be voicing Black Cat. (Who, funny enough, was voiced by Sackhoff’s friend and fellow BSG cast member Tricia Helfer in the last Spider-Man game.)

At the X-Men front: Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes), Jamie Chung, (Suckerpunch, Hangover II), and Scott Porter (Caprica, Friday Night Lights), will all voice the different playable characters you can choose to play as in the new game. Porter’s already a fan of the X-Men, and his IMDB profile lists his favorite characters as Psylocke, Nightcrawler, and Havok. (He also wants to play Hawkeye but Jeremy Renner swiped that role from him.) Continue reading “When Worlds Collide: Mainstream Actors Migrating to Marvel Games” »

Guys, I cannot tell you how excited I am about this. Not becuase this is going to be the videogame that becomes the nirvana of all video games and dominates society and will beat out Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 and Bioshock Infinite and and and and….breathe, breathe…

“It would be okay if they charged a quarter for it.”
The provebial reaction by Jace Hall Show Producer/Director Todd Roy on the announcement that Space Invaders will be made into a major motion picture.
Space Invaders, the consummate classic, is ranked as the Top Arcade Game of all time by the Guinness Book of World Records, which is apparently enough for producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Odd Lot Entertainment’s Gigi Pritzker to take it to the big-screen.

Errr, gonna make an apology here guys. That post we did about Comic-Com losing its clout maaaay have been a bit premature. For one, io9′s pointed out how TV is the new hot thing at Comic-Con, and while the Avengers may not (or may?) be making a presence, Game of Thrones, the Guild, and others will be storming the gates. For two, the Mass Effect movie is finally making an appearance.
All we know so far is this Continue reading “Fight for the Lost at Comic-Con 2011–the Mass Effect Movie is coming!” »

It’s been a good decade to be a geek—since the massive success of Batman Begins back in 2004, movie companies have been more comfortable greenlighting projects designed to suck in the avid geek crowd. It should’ve been win-win: Geeks love to be excited about things, and studios like having a built in audience for their movies.
Well, sort of. Thanks to the not-exactly-succes-okay-more-like-failures of last year’s Scott Pilgrim Versus the World and Tron Legacy at the box office, which were expected to do well on account of their huge reactions at Comic-Con, many studios are pulling out of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
The New York Times is reporting that Disney, Warner Brothers, and Dreamworks are already not in attendance, and Marvel’s on the fence about making an appearance.
In previous years, Comic-Con was a supposed mythical hype machine for upcoming films—the fans are excited to be there and getting sneak peeks, and would go out and give glowing praise on the internet to help spread word of mouth. For some reason though, that massive excitement didn’t always translate into ticket sales, and bombs like Scott Pilgrim were the result.
The lack of major presence at Comic-Con may not be so much a backlash against geek culture though as it is big-budget movies. Over at the Escapist, Moviebob gives a great explanation about why the failure of these geek-favorite movies led to the death of Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of H.P Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness.
Additionally, ever since the shmorzaborg of 2007′s big-budget releases, which went upwards of $300 Million (Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End, and Spider-Man 3), which didn’t really generate enough sales to warrant such huge budgets, Hollywood’s been cutting back and trimming down. The latest Pirates film clocked in at a much more modest reported budget of around $240 million.
So, while Comic-Con should still be a fun time for all, you might want to count on the possibility that The Avengers won’t have any kind of appearance.

We’ve got a lot of great alien in movies heading our way this summer. Super 8 is already out, Cowboys and Aliens looks to be a smash, and Fast Five has already swept the Box Office. (I include Fast Five ’cause I just pretend everything Vin Diesel’s in is Pitch Black.)
But here’s an awesome little film that’s about to sneak up and bash the U.S over the head with a baseball bat—Attack the Block
You haven’t heard of it, you haven’t heard of anyone who’s in it, (Unless you’re a fan of Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, or Paul, in which case, say hello to Nick Frost), and you probably never saw a trailer for it until ten seconds ago. So why should you see it?
Well for one, it’s already won the SXSW Midnight Screening Audience award, and for another, here’s the premise: Aliens attack London, and a bunch of kids from the wrong side of town decide they’re not going to take this lying down. These aren’t your cute and adorable Spielberg/J.J Abrams kids from Super 8, these kids grew up with gang violence and living on the streets. While I count myself a fan of the Spielberg fantasy, this movie definitely belongs in the modern age more than Super 8 does.
Besides, what would you do if aliens attacked your home town—run away, or bash them over the head with a baseball bat?
