Picture 4Amateur game developer Smea is nearing completion on an unofficial port of Portal for the Nintendo DS.

One of the benefits to the old school Nintendo DS is that it allows players to use the hand held console to test their own homebrew games, as opposed to newer systems (many of which are all but jailbreak-proof). Director Guillermo del Toro, who is previously responsible for films like Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth, revealed the trailer to his newest project last night.

The film is called Pacific Rim and it will feature voice actor Ellen McLain as a robot AI. McLain did the voice work for Portal’s antagonist GLaDOS (via Polygon).

As you can see in the trailer below (0:47 sec), the AI in the film has the same audio processing on it as GLaDOS does in Portal.

Graphing calculators haven’t changed much since their inception in 1985 — despite the advanced touchscreens of ones like the Casio CP-400, both Texas Instruments’ TI-83 and 84 graphic calculators are still the most commonly used in Science and Math.

They’re also still characterized by the same colorless 8-bit screens they’ve had for decades now.

That could all be about to change, as ‘Portal’ is finally coming to Texas Instruments graphing calculators. Continue reading “You can now think with Portals—on Your Graphic Calculator.” »

The Museum of Modern Art will now be adding video games to its collection. Initially there will be 14 games that will appear including Portal, The Sims and Pac-Man. We will begin seeing the game appear in and around March of next year.

The 14 titles are just a start though, the museum plans on adding several more to bring the total to around 40 of the industry’s most iconic offerings. According to the senior curator at the museum’s Department of Architecture and Design, Paola Antonelli (via Polygon),  the 14 titles are just a “seedbed for an initial wish list of about 40.” Antonelli  goes on to say that the initial 14 will act as the foundation for “a new category of artworks in MoMA’s collection that we hope will grow in the future.”

A new Portal speed run world record has been set–8:31.93

It took only 8 minutes 31 seconds for players Nick “Z1mb0bw4y” Roth, Josh “Inexistence” Peaker, Nick “Gocnak” Kerns, and Sebastian “Xebaz” Dressler to finish Portal. The new time is a world record that shaved off nearly 50 seconds from the previous record set in 2010. Watch the Sourceruns members rip through the Valve classic in the video below.

Valve will be entering schools across America soon.  Teach With Portals, Valve’s first step into the teaching market, makes me wonder why they didn’t think of this before: utilizing lessons, designed by teachers themselves, you get educational versions of Portal 2 and Puzzle Maker, 2 Valve-crafted video games.

All you have to do is be a real teacher (in a very GLaDOS way, they have methods of finding out whether you’re actually an educator) and sign up for free for the Education Beta on the Steam for Schools website — and soon, you’ll be getting the values of the Portal world to your students. Instead of searching or a cure for cancer, one brave scientist apparently decided to buck all trends and create what pretty much all prepubescents, teens and pretty much every living human being really wants.

That would be the The Hoverboard Lightsaber Portal Gun — a mutant offspring between the universes of Star Wars, Back to the Future II, and of course Portal. The end results are pretty entertaining. Continue reading “Scientists Know What The World Needs: A Hoverboard Lightsaber Portal Gun!” »

Yet another ‘Portal’ fan film has emerged, and to be honest, we can’t get enough of ‘em.

That’s mostly because they’re all pretty f*cking rad. No, “Lab Ratt” doesn’t star the mute Chell  — c’mon, between the shorts and the cartoon, we’re getting our fair share — or the 80′s hair band playing live in the Enrichment Center (sh*t).

No, this one’s lovingly devoted to the darker/gloomier depressed side of the Portal universe, giving you a glimpse inside Rattman’s deranged brain, as well as how he copes/medicates/deals with the wrath that is irate AI. Who wants cake? Okay, now who wants PORTAL cake?

Desperately searching for exactly how this genius baking entrepreneur designed such a delicious-looking pastry, I was somewhat taken aback to find that that A)Portal themed cakes are really nothing new; there’s a crapload of all over the Internet — and also that B) somebody took the Portal cake scenario to a new level with this — a cake actually being Portal-ed, complete with aperture Portal gun and everything. Given the massive amount of live-action Portal fan films that have emerged over the course of the past year or so, maybe we should have known it was only a matter of time before we got a cartoon based on the franchise, too.

Kinda nice that somebody’s decided to put together their own animated Portal, even if it is only a short. Though it has yet to be aired, Companionship‘s character designs alone look incredible (as sparse as they are).

And look out, Bandai: seems this was actually the work of one man Continue reading “So ‘Portal’ The Cartoon Looks Pretty Amazing” »

If you haven’t heard by now, reports that seem to originate from the sometimes reliable AppleInsider claim Apple CEO Tim Cook was spotted at Valve’s headquarters in Bellevue, Washington this morning.

The report didn’t provide any information about what Cook might have been doing there or cite any sources for the story, but the rumor has of course set off a storm of speculation regarding what the two companies might have been discussing. If there’s a song I thought I’d see a would-be stripper pole dance to, it was probably something out of any video game. But now it’s kind of cool to be a nerd/geek again, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that this girl, courtesy of Geekologie, took it upon herself to do some freestyle pole-lympics to Portal 2′s “Now I Only Want You Gone” theme.

Unfortunately us guys will have to settle for a sports bra and some admittedly un-sexy underpants. That said, however, everything else is in pretty tip-top shape. Vertical, horizontal, upside down, whatever the names of those moves are, she looks great doing them. I’m pretty sure Continue reading “Hot or Not: Girl Pole Dances to Portal 2” »

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play Super Mario Brothers with a Portal gun? The devs at Stabyourself have recreated the original Super Mario Brothers game except in this re-imagining of the classic NES title Mario is equipped with an 8-bit model Aperture Science Portal Gun. The gun’s mechanics obviously allow the player to approach the original title’s level design with a much more puzzle oriented mind set.

In August of last year rumours were floating around the internet about a Super Mario Brothers and Portal mashup. The folks at Stabyourself had a very ambitious project ahead of them but it’s now finally playable (via Wired). Its called “Mari0″ and its available free for PC’s on Windows, OS X and Linux.

Like we see in the Continue reading “Super Mario Gets A Portal Gun: “Mari0″ Crossover Available For Download” »

Have you ever wanted to see a Lego version of Skyrim, Portal, or Assassins Creed? Good news– Alex Kobbs put together a stop-motion animation using Lego for some of 2011′s biggest titles.

The video, which has an original score by Glen Ballard, was originally shown on three large screens at the 2012 Dice Conference in Las Vegas during the 15th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, but we’ve embedded it below. According to Kobbs, the entire production took approximately three months from beginning to end. If you’re wondering, the whole thing was shot on a Canon Digital Rebel XTi at 24fps and 12 movements per second.

While some of the franchises included in the video already have Lego versions Continue reading “Skyrim, Portal, and 2011′s Best Games Get Lego Stop-Motion Animation” »

Originally released in 2007, Portal has made its way to just about every platform but has yet to make its way onto the big mobile operating systems. Luckily it will soon be coming to at least one, Android, thanks to the hard work of some third-party devs and the Unity 3D Engine.

Although this isn’t an official port (no involvement from Valve) the first-person puzzle-platformer appears to already be running in beta based on the February 11th YouTube video uploaded by AndroidPolice (below). The video shows a screen capture of version 0.004 running on an Android device, and that build is already available to download to all.
