Alternate cable options have been available for a while now like Hulu, Netflix and HBOGo on our gaming consoles and now it looks as though Sony is working on its very own multichannel TV Service, according to Variety (via IGN).
Not much is known about the service at this time. Variety says the service will be an MSO or Multiple Service Operator and that Sony is actively seeking partnerships with various content providers.

He’s starred in what could be the most iconic racing film franchise of all-time. He’s filmed with Michael Bay, shared a ring with Hulk Hogan (allowing him to win) and successfully pulled off being a tooth fairy.
What could possibly be next in such a storied career?
How about a reality series?
Dwayne The Rock Johnson and his smorgasbord of reps announced that the A-List Wrestler turned actor will be launching “The Hero” a reality series pitting ten contestants head to head by pushing them to the brink (and beyond!) of their personal limits. Seth Horvitz was just a regular guy jonesing for a new TV when he purchased one off Amazon, what he ended up with however was a Sig Sauer 716 patrol rifle that is illegal in most metropolitan cities.
Horvitz originally purchased a 39 Inch LCD monitor for around $320 through Amazon, but inexplicably received the $1600 rifle intended for Independence Gun Shop in Pennsylvania.
“When I saw some metal parts inside the box, I thought, ‘Maybe this is a TV stand or mount or something,” he told the magazine. “When I realized it was an assault rifle, it was pure shock and disbelief.”

We have to say that making The Jace Hall Show in 3D, one of the first online series we know of to do so, has been quite a ride. Sure the process has a few tricks for the producers to learn, but ultimately 3D boils down to the consumer experience.
For the consumer, 3D can be expensive, inconsistent and often require more accessories than you’d like (which is why we offer both 2D and 3D experiences)
But there’s a company trying to change all of that, creating “3-D Vision” — an instant converter that transforms any TV into a 3D-enabled device, and any content into 3-D.
At the surface it sounds too good to be true, which usually means only one thing.
But how does it work? Continue reading “DAILY TECH: How To Convert Any 2D Television Into 3D (And Win $10,000)” »

For those of you plugged into the universe that is prime time television, Community will be wrapping up its third season tonight with an 8-bit episode dubbed “Digital Estate Planning.”
The episode will be part of a three part finale, which will last two hours, and will have 30 Rock’s finale squeezed in between (sure, why not).

Courtesy of Geekologie comes a remarkable and rather wonderful way to murder your television. Here’s some magic from Aussie50, an engineering enthusiast who broadcasts his destructive hobbies via his YouTube channel.
In this case, it was a couple of unfortunate plasma screen televisions who met their untimely end at the hands of a microwave transmitter, hooked up to the television to basically blow it up. While the results are impressive, this is the truncated version — if you’d like the A&E Biography uncut version, go here. If there’s a word to describe this creation it would be somewhere in between epic and amazing. A TV built entirely out of legos featuring an animated superman (with scrolling background) flying through Metropolis…sort of.
The user “TooMuchCaffeine” who created it said that the idea has been:
“Kicking about in my head for months and the arrival of the DC minifigs seemed liked the perfect excuse to actually attempt to build it.” Continue reading “LEGO TV Brings Animated Superman to Life” »

With CES 2012 set to kick off next week on January 10, the big talk of this year’s show is smart TVs, mostly due to Apple’s expected entrance into the HDTV market. Due to this, much of the media is picking up the story that 3D won’t be as big of a focus at the show as it was last year.
According to CNET, at least one TV vendor plans to grab some attention with its latest 3D technology– Toshiba is introducing a glasses-free 3D TV and plan to be first to the U.S. market in the first quarter of 2012. Continue reading “Toshiba To Launch First Glasses-Free 3D TV in U.S. in Q1 2012” »

According to a report from Daily Mail late last night, both Apple and Google have shown interest in acquiring Premier League live TV streaming rights for next season after rights to the current season come to an end. Apple would presumably add the service to their Apple TV content lineup, at least in the UK, and Google to their Google TV platform.
The Premier League is seen as the type of premium content that will help establish Apple TV in the UK and boost iPad sales Continue reading “Apple and Google In Talks To Acquire Premier League TV Streaming Rights” »

We knew it would only be so long before rumors began of an Apple Branded HDTV and today longtime Apple analyst Gene Munster certainly didn’t disappoint. via Business Insider” target=”_blank”>Talking at the IGNITION: Future of Media Event, Munster made some claims of what we can expect from Apple’s upcoming living-room take over.
In case you need a refresher, we’ve already heard a bunch of rumors that Apple is working on an HDTV set, most of which seem to stem from Steve Jobs’ comments to author Walter Isaacson that he had “finally cracked” the TV before his passing.
After urging audience members to hold off Continue reading “Here’s What to Expect From Apple’s HDTV, Coming 2012” »

It was merely a decade ago when humans had to adjust a pair of rabbit ear antennas to retrieve content through their TV set. But here we are in 2011, where phones talk to us instead of us talking to them and where politicians don’t get caught cheating in office, but on twitter. Times are clearly changing, and inherent within all of this is how content is delivered to us, particularly on our television set.
For those of you perusing the market, gawking at the endless choices of how to get all of your reality TV shows, Blu-Ray, video games, and movies on one device, there might be a lot of confusion. Undoubtedly there Continue reading “6 Ways You Could Be Watching TV a Year From Now” »

We’ve talked a lot about all the rumors regarding a potential Apple branded HDTV. Some are calling it the new Apple TV (not to be confused with their current set-top box), some prefer “iTV” (might have some trademark issues from a 50-year old UK TV network), and we’ve even heard “Apple TV Pro”, and simply “Apple Display”.
Perhaps “Apple Display” makes the most sense given it’s unlikely Apple will release a TV that is just a television. We already have hints at a Siri voice-controlled, iCloud integrated Apple HDTV, and it’s of course possible Apple plans to keep their current (or an upgraded) Apple TV set-top box around for consumers not interested in upgrading their existing HDTV. Perhaps the biggest revelation to come out of the recently released Steve Jobs bio by author Walter Isaacson is the possibility of an Apple branded HDTV. Jobs told Isaacson he “finally cracked it” when talking about plans to create an integrated TV that is “completely easy to use” and that “seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud”.
Today analysts are coming out of the woodwork claiming Apple is already working on the device and has been for quite some time. The New York Times published a report by Nick Bilton where he claims Apple Continue reading “Apple Working on HDTV with Siri Voice-Control and iCloud Integration” »

Bobby Brown recently announced plans to return to television, this time with ex-bandmates New Edition, with whom he helped sire a whole new brand of ‘boy band’ rock. Which pretty much became a joke after New Edition went away.
“We have a conference call every Sunday,” said Bobby Brown of the new reunion. “We’re putting the band back together. I think the thing that was missing with us was prayer. Being able to pray together and understand our differences. I think that’s what made us fight so much.” Continue reading “Bobby Brown Beats The Odds, Plans Return to Reality TV” »

With Steve Jobs’ officially authorized biography set to hit bookstores on Monday, more and more bits of information are beginning to leak. Earlier we brought you a look at several excerpts from the book on Jobs talking about Android, Bill Gates, and his biological father, among other things.
The Washington Post recently brought us a story where Jobs tells author Walter Isaacson about his ambition to build an Apple TV. A real Apple-branded HD television, not that set-top box, hobby project currently sporting the Apple TV moniker. Jobs makes it sound as if he has specific plans. By saying things like, “I finally cracked it,” it sounds like Apple may be hard at work Continue reading “Proof Steve Jobs was working on an Apple branded HDTV” »

TV on your iPad just got a little better. Turner Broadcasting just dropped TNT for iPad, an app optimized specifically for the device’s larger screen and serving up full-length TV shows and movies originally aired on the network. TBS for iPad does the same, offering other Turner shows including Conan, The Office, and Tyler Perry’s House of Payne.

It wont be long before Apple steps up to the plate with native iOS apps on your flatscreen, most likely through a future iteration of Apple TV. That’s why it’s no surprise other TV manufacturers including Sharp, Philips, and LG are planning on teaming up to offer devs the ability to develop standardized apps for their budding smart TV platforms.
The three vendors have teamed up specifically to combat fears of fragmentation and offer developers a “write once, run everywhere” development platform to bring apps into the living room. A forthcoming SDK will be based on HTML5 (as well as CE-HTML and HbbTV) and is expected to become available sometime in October.
From the press release:
“The initiative aims to simplify the way applications are Continue reading “Sharp, LG, and Philips team up to bring apps to your TV” »
